1545 - سَلامةُ القَلبِ‏

1545. SOUNDNESS OF THE HEART

( وَلَا تُخْزِنِي يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ * يَوْمَ لَا يَنْفَعُ مالٌ وَلا بَنُونَ * إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ)1

“Do not disgrace me on the day that they will be resurrected, the day when neither wealth nor children will avail, except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart.” 2

5307. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام - في قولِهِ تعالى‏ : (إلّا مَن أتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلبٍ سَليمٍ) - : القَلبُ السَّليمُ الذي يَلقَى‏ رَبَّهُ ، وليسَ فيهِ أحَدٌ سِواهُ ، وكُلُّ قَلبٍ فيهِ شِركٌ أو شَكٌّ فهُو ساقِطٌ3

5307. Imam al-Sadiq (AS), with respect to Allah's verse in the Qur'an:“except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart” said, 'A sound heart that meets its Lord having nothing other than Him in it. Every heart that has polytheism or doubt is a failed heart.'4

5308. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام - أيضاً - : هُو القَلبُ الذي سَلِمَ مِن حُبِّ الدنيا5

5308. Imam al-Sadiq (AS), also said, 'It is a heart that is safe from the love of this world.'6

5309. عيسى عليه السلام : القُلوبُ ما لم تَخرِقْها الشَّهَواتُ ويُدَنِّسْها الطَّمَعُ ويُقْسِها النَّعيمُ فَسوفَ تَكونُ أوعيَةً للحِكمَةِ7

5309. Prophet Jesus (AS) said, 'As long as the hearts are not punctured with desires and polluted with greed and hardened by bounties, they will be vessels of wisdom.'8

5310. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا يَسلَمُ لكَ قَلبُكَ حتّى‏ تُحِبَّ للمُؤمنينَ ما تُحِبُّ لنفسِكَ9

5310. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Your heart will not be sound unless you love for the believers what you love for yourself.'10

5311. الإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : أسلَمُ القُلوبِ ما طَهُرَ مِن الشُّبُهاتِ11

5311. Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'The soundest of hearts is the heart that is pure of obscure matters.'12

5312. الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : لا عِلمَ كَطَلَبِ السَّلامَةِ ، ولا سَلامَةَ كسَلامَةِ القَلبِ13

5312. Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'There is no knowledge like the acquirement of wellbeing [for oneself], and there is no wellbeing like the soundness of the heart.'14

1546 - عَينُ القَلبِ‏

1546. THE EYE OF THE HEART

5313. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : لولا أنَّ الشَّياطينَ يَحومُونَ على‏ قُلوبِ بَني آدَمَ لَنَظَرُوا إلَى المَلَكوتِ1

5313. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'If it was not for the devils hovering around the hearts of human beings, they would be able to see the Divine Kingdom (malakut).'2

5314. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام - في المُناجاةِ - : إلهي هَبْ لي كمالَ الانقِطاعِ إلَيكَ ، وأنِرْ أبصارَ قُلوبِنا بِضِياءِ نَظَرِها إلَيكَ ، حتّى‏ تَخرِقَ أبصارُ القُلوبِ حُجُبَ النُّورِ ، فَتَصِلَ إلى‏ مَعدِنِ العَظَمةِ ، وتَصيرَ أرواحُنا مُعَلّقةً بِعِزِّ قُدسِكَ3

5314. Imam Ali (AS), in his intimate supplication said, 'O Allah, grant me the perfection of devotion to You, and illuminate the sight of our hearts with the radiance of being able to behold You until the sight of our hearts pierces through the veils of light, reaching the source of Exaltedness, and our souls become attached to the glory of Your Sacredness.'4

5315. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : إنّما شيعَتُنا أصحابُ الأربَعةِ الأعيُنِ : عَينانِ في الرَّأسِ ، وعَينانِ في القَلبِ ، ألا والخَلائقُ كُلُّهم كذلكَ ، ألا إنّ اللَّهَ عَزَّوجلَّ فَتَحَ أبصارَكُم وأعمى‏ أبصارَهُم5

5315. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'Our followers [Shia] are people who have four eyes: two eyes in the head and two eyes in the heart. Verily, all creation have so, but Allah Almighty has opened your sight and blinded their sight.'6

1547 - اُذُنُ القَلبِ‏

1547. THE EAR OF THE HEART

5316. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : لولا تَمَزُّعُ قلوبِكُم وتَزَيُّدُكُم في الحَديثِ لَسَمِعتُم ما أسمَعُ1

5316. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'If it were not for the dispersion of your hearts and your excess in speaking, you would hear what I hear.'2

5317. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام: إنّ لكَ قَلباً ومَسامِعَ ، وإنَّ اللَّهَ إذا أرادَ أن يَهدِيَ عَبداً فَتَحَ مَسامِعَ قَلبِهِ ، وإذا أرادَ بهِ غيرَ ذلكَ خَتَمَ مَسامِعَ قَلبِهِ فلا يَصلُحُ أبداً ، وهُو قَولُ اللَّهِ تعالى‏ (أم عَلى‏ قُلُوبٍ أقْفالُها)3 .4

5317. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'You have a heart and ears to hear, and verily if Allah wants to guide a servant, He will open the ears of his hearts, and if He wills the opposite, He will seal the ears of his heart so it will never again be sound. This is the purport of Allah's verse:“or are there locks on the hearts?” 56

1548 - إقبالُ القَلبِ وإدبارُهُ‏

1548. THE DRAWING NEAR AND THE TURNING AWAY OF THE HEART

5318. الإمامُ الرِّضا عليه السلام : إنَّ لِلقُلوبِ إقبالاً وإدباراً ، ونَشاطاً وفُتوراً ، فإذا أقبَلَت بَصُرَت وفَهِمَت ، وإذا أدبَرَت كَلَّت ومَلَّت ، فَخُذُوها عِندَ إقبالِها ونَشاطِها ، واترُكُوها عِندَ إدبارِها وفُتورِها1

5318. Imam al-Rida (AS) said, 'Hearts draw near and turn away, and become active and frigid. When they draw forward they see and understand, and when they fall back they become dim and weary. Therefore, make use of them when they draw near and are active, and leave them when they are feeble and weary.'2

5319. الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : إذا نَشِطَتِ القُلوبُ فَأودِعْها (فَأودِعُوها) ، وإذا نَفرَت فَوَدِّعُوها3

5319. Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'When the hearts are active commit them [to use], and when they are averse, leave them.'4

1549 - طَهارَةُ القَلبِ‏

1549. PURITY OF THE HEART

5320. موسى‏ عليه السلام : يا رَبِّ ، مَن أهلُكَ الذينَ تُظِلُّهُم في ظِلِّ عَرشِكَ يَومَ لا ظِلَّ إلّا ظِلُّكَ ؟ قالَ : فَأوحَى اللَّهُ إلَيهِ : الطاهِرَةُ قُلوبُهُم1

5320. Prophet Moses (AS) said, 'O Lord, who are those whom You will shade under the Shade of Your Throne on the Day when no shade will avail other than Yourr Shade?' He said, 'Allah Almighty revealed, 'Those with pure hearts.'2

5321. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : طَهِّرُوا أنفُسَكُم مِن دَنَسِ الشَّهَواتِ تُدرِكُوا رَفيعَ الدَّرَجاتِ3

5321. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Purify yourselves from the impurity of carnal desires and you will perceive elevated stations.'4

5322. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : قُلوبُ العِبادِ الطاهِرَةُ مَواضِعُ نَظَرِ اللَّهِ سبحانَهُ ، فَمَن طَهَّرَ قَلبَهُ نَظَرَ إلَيهِ5

5322. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The hearts of servants that are pure are places that Allah looks at [with mercy]. So whoever purifies his heart, Allah will look at it.'6

1550 - انشِراحُ القَلبِ‏

1550. EXPANDING OF THE HEART

( فَمَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَهْدِيَهُ يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ لِلْإِسْلامِ وَمَنْ يُرِدْ أَنْ يُضِلَّهُ يَجْعَلْ صَدْرَهُ ضَيِّقاً حَرَجاً كَأَنَّما يَصَّعَّدُ فِي السَّماءِ كَذَلِكَ يَجْعَلُ اللَّهُ الرِّجْسَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ)1

“Whomever Allah desires to guide, He opens his breast to Islam, and whomever He desires to lead astray, He makes his breast narrow and straitened as if he were climbing to a height. Thus does Allah lay [spiritual] defilement on those who do not have faith.” 2

( أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ)3

“Did We not open your breast for you?” 4

5323. مجمع البيان : وَردَتِ الرّوايةُ الصَّحيحة أنّه لمّا نَزَلَت هذهِ الآيَةُ : - (فَمَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ أن يَهدِيَهُ) - سُئلَ رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله عن شَرحِ الصَّدرِ ما هُو ؟ فقالَ: نورٌ يَقذِفُهُ اللَّهُ في قَلبِ المؤمنِ فَيَنشَرِحُ لَهُ صَدرُهُ ويَنفَسِحُ

قالوا: فهَل لذلكَ مِن أمارَةٍ يُعرَفُ بها ؟ قالَ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله: نَعَم ، الإنابَةُ إلى‏ دارِ الخُلودِ ، والتَّجافي عن دارِ الغُرورِ ، والاستِعدادُ لِلمَوتِ قَبلَ نُزولِ المَوتِ5

5323. Majma al-Bayan, It is narrated in a authenticated tradition: When this verse was revealed:“Whomever Allah desires to guide...” , the Prophet (SAWA) was asked about the expanding of the breast and what it was. He said, 'It is a light that Allah casts into the heart of a believer and it expands the heart and broadens it.' They asked, 'Is there a sign by which this may be known?' He (SAWA) said, 'Yes, to return to the eternal realm, to shun away from the realm of delusion, and to prepare for death before it comes.'6

1551 - حِجابُ القَلبِ‏

1551. THE VEIL OF THE HEART

5324. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنَّ المؤمنَ إذا أذنَبَ كانَت نُكتَةٌ سَوداءُ في قَلبِهِ ، فإن تابَ ونَزَعَ واستَغفَرَ صُقِلَ قَلبُهُ، فإن زاد زَادَت ، فذلكَ الرانُ الذي ذَكَرَهُ اللَّهُ في كتابِهِ (كَلَّا بَلْ رانَ على‏ قُلوبِهِم ما كانُوا يَكسِبُونَ)1 ،2

5324. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'When a believer sins a black dot appears on his heart. If he repents, pulls back and seeks forgiveness his heart is cleansed from the black dot, but if he increases his sins the dot grows larger, and this is the rust that Allah has mentioned in His Book:“No indeed! Rather their hearts have been sullied by what they have been earning.” 34

5325. الإمامُ الكاظمُ عليه السلام : أوحَى اللَّهُ تعالى‏ إلى‏ داودَ عليه السلام : يا داودُ ، حَذِّرْ وأنذِرْ (ونَذِّرْ) أصحابَكَ عن حُبِّ الشَّهَواتِ ، فإنّ المُعَلَّقةَ قُلوبُهُم بِشَهَواتِ الدنيا قُلوبُهُم مَحجوبَةٌ عَنِّي5

5325. Imam al-Kazim (AS) said, 'Allah Almighty revealed unto David (AS), 'O David, warn and caution your companions against the love of desires, for those whose hearts are attached to worldly desires, their hearts are veiled from Me.'6

1552 - قَسوَةُ القَلبِ‏

1552. HARD-HEARTEDNESS

( ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَلِكَ فَهِيَ كَالْحِجارَةِ أَوْ أَشَدُّ قَسْوَةً وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْحِجارَةِ لَما يَتَفَجَّرُ مِنْهُ الأَنْهارُ وَإِنَّ مِنْها لَما يَشَّقَّقُ فَيَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ الْماءُ وَإِنَّ مِنْها لَما يَهْبِطُ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ وَما اللَّهُ بِغافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ)1

“Then your hearts hardened after that; so they are like stones, or even harder. For indeed there are some stones from which streams gush forth, and indeed there are some of them that split, and water issues from them, and indeed there are some of them that fall for the fear of Allah. And Allah is not oblivious of what you do.” 2

5326. الكافي : فيما ناجَى اللَّهُ عَزَّوجلَّ بهِ موسى‏ عليه السلام : يا موسى‏ ، لا تُطَوِّلْ في الدُّنيا أملَكَ فَيَقسُوَ قَلبُكَ ، والقاسي القَلبِ مِنّي بَعيدٌ3

5326. It is narrated in al-Kafi that, In one of Allah's intimate conversations with Prophet Moses (AS), He said, 'O Moses, do not prolong your hope in this world for your heart will turn hard, and hard hearts are far away from Me.'4

5327. عيسى عليه السلام : إنّ الدابَّةَ إذا لم تُرتَكَبْ ولم تُمتَهَنْ وتُستَعمَلْ لَتَصعُبُ ويَتَغَيَّرُ خُلقُها ، وكذلكَ القُلوبُ إذا لم تُرَقَّقْ بذِكرِ المَوتِ ويَتبَعُها دُؤوبُ العِبادَةِ تَقسُو وتَغلُظُ5

5327. Prophet Jesus (AS) said, 'When an animal is not mounted, trained or used it will become hard to use and its character will change. The same goes for the hearts - if they are not made soft with the remembrance of death, followed by diligent worship, they will harden and become harsh.'6

5328. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : لا تُكثِرُوا الكلامَ بغَيرِ ذِكرِ اللَّهِ ؛ فإنَّ كَثرَةَ الكلامِ بغَيرِ ذِكرِ اللَّهِ قَسوَةُ القَلبِ ، إنّ أبعَدَ الناسِ مِن اللَّهِ القَلبُ القاسي7

5328. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Do not speak excessively without the remembrance of Allah, for excessive speech devoid of the remembrance of Allah hardens the heart. The farthest of people from Allah are the hard-hearted.'8

5329. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : ثلاثةٌ يُقسِينَ القَلبَ : استِماعُ اللَّهوِ ، وطَلَبُ الصَّيدِ ، وإتيانُ بابِ السُّلطانِ9

5329. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Three things harden the heart: listening to distracting words of amusement (lahw), hunting, and associating with rulers.'10

5330. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام: ماجَفَّتِ الدُّموعُ إلّا لِقَسوةِ القُلوبِ ، وما قَسَتِ القُلوبُ إلّا لكَثرَةِ الذُّنوبِ11

5330. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Tears only dry up [i.e. fail to flow] as a result of hardness of the heart, and the hearts only harden as a result of frequent sinning.'12

5331. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : إنّ كَثرَةَ المالِ مَفسَدَةٌ للدِّينِ، مَقساةٌ لِلقلوبِ13

5331. Imam Ali (AS) said, ' Verily too much money corrupts religion and hardens the heart.'14

5332. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام: النَّظَرُ إلَى البَخيلِ يُقسي القَلبَ15

5332. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Looking at a miserly person hardens the heart.'16

5333. الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام: إنَّ للَّهِ عُقوباتٍ في القُلوبِ والأبدانِ : ضَنْكٌ في المَعيشَةِ ووَهنٌ في العِبادَةِ، وما ضُرِبَ عَبدٌ بِعُقوبَةٍ أعظَمَ مِن قَسوَةِ القَلبِ17

5333. Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'Allah has punishments of the hearts and of the bodies: a difficult livelihood, weakness in worship, and the harshest punishment a servant is stricken with is hardness of the heart.'18

1553 - مَرَضُ القَلبِ‏

1553. SICKNESS OF THE HEART

( فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضاً وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِما كانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ)1

“There is sickness in their hearts; then Allah increased their sickness, and there is a painful punishment for them because of the lies they used to tell” 2

5334. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام: إيّاكُم والمِراءَ والخُصومَةَ؛ فإنّهُما يُمرِضانِ القُلوبَ علَى الإخوانِ ويَنبُتُ علَيهِما النِّفاقُ3

5334. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Beware of disputing and quarrelling, for they sicken the heart against one's brethren and give rise to hypocrisy against them.'4

5335. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا وَجَعَ أوجَعُ للقُلوبِ مِن الذُّنوبِ5

5335. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Nothing hurts the heart more than sins.'6

1554 - ما يَشفِي القَلبَ‏

1554. WHAT CURES THE HEART

( يا أَيُّها النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُمْ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِما فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدىً وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ)1

“O mankind! There has certainly come to you an advice from your Lord, and a cure for what is in the breasts, and a guidance and mercy for the faithful.” 2

5336. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : إنَّ تَقوَى اللَّهِ دَواءُ داءِ قُلوبِكُم، وبَصَرُ عَمى‏ أفئدَتِكُم ، وشِفاءُ مَرَضِ أجسادِكُم (أجسامِكُم) ، وصَلاحُ فَسادِ صُدورِكُم ، وطَهورُ دَنَسِ أنفُسِكُم ، وجَلاءُ عَشا (غِشاءِ) أبصارِكُم3

5336. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Verily Godwariness is the remedy for the sickness of your hearts, and the sight for the blindness of your hearts, and the cure for the sickness of your bodies, and the correction of the corruption of your chests, and the purification for the pollution of your selves, and the unveiling of the blurriness of your eyes.'4

1555 - ما يُميتُ القَلبَ‏

1555. WHAT KILLS THE HEART

5337. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله - في مَواعِظِهِ لأبي ذَرٍّ - : إيّاكَ وكَثرَةَ الضَّحِكِ ؛ فإنّهُ يُمِيتُ القَلبَ1

5337. The Prophet (SAWA), in his advice to Abu Dharr said, 'Beware of laughing a lot, for it kills the heart.'2

5338. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن عَشِقَ شيئاً أعشى‏ (أعمى‏) بَصَرَهُ ، وأمرَضَ قَلبَهُ ، فهُو يَنظُرُ بعَينٍ غيرِ صَحيحَةٍ ، ويَسمَعُ باُذُنٍ غيرِ سَميعَةٍ ، قد خَرَقَتِ الشَّهَواتُ عَقلَهُ ، وأماتَتِ الدنيا قَلبَهُ3

5338. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'He who loves something that makes his eyes blind and his heart sick is looking with false eyes and hearing with impaired hearing. Lusts have pierced his intellect and the world has killed his heart.'4

5339. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن قَلَّ وَرَعُهُ ماتَ قَلبُهُ ، ومَن ماتَ قَلبُهُ دَخَلَ النارَ5

5339. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'One whose piety decreases, his heart dies, and whoever's heart dies will enter the Fire.'6

1556 - ما يُحيِي القَلبَ‏

1556. WHAT REVIVES THE HEART

5340. لقمانُ عليه السلام - لابنِهِ وهُو يَعِظُهُ - : يا بُنيَّ ، جالِسِ العُلَماءَ ، وزاحِمْهُم برُكبَتَيكَ ؛ فإنّ اللَّهَ عَزَّوجلَّ يُحيي القُلوبَ بِنُورِ الحِكمَةِ كما يُحيي الأرضَ بِوابِلِ السَّماءِ1

5340. Luqman (AS), giving advice to his son, said, 'O my son, sit in the company of scholars so much that your knees touch theirs, for Allah Almighty revives the hearts with the light of wisdom like the earth is revived with rain from the sky.'2

5341. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّوجلَّ يقولُ : تَذاكُرُ العِلمِ بينَ عِبادي مِمّا تَحيا عليهِ القُلوبُ المَيِّتةُ إذا هُمُ انتَهَوا فيهِ إلى‏ أمري3

5341. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Allah Almighty says, 'The discussion of knowledge among My servants revives the dead hearts if by it they seek to fulfil My command.'4

5342. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام - مِن وصيَّتِهِ لابنِهِ الحَسَنِ عليه السلام - : أحيِ قَلبَكَ بالمَوعِظَةِ ، وأمِتْهُ بالزَّهادَةِ5

5342. Imam Ali (AS), in his will to his son Imam Hasan (AS) said, 'Revive your heart with exhortations, and kill it will asceticism.'6

5343. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام: لِقاءُ أهلِ الخَيرِ عِمارَةُ القَلبِ.7

5343. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Meeting righteous people improves the heart.'8

5344. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام - من وصيَّتِهِ لابنِهِ الحسنِ عليه السلام - : اُوصِيكَ بتَقوَى اللَّهِ - أي بُنَيَّ - ولُزومِ أمرِهِ ، وعِمارَةِ قَلبِكَ بذِكرِهِ.9

5344. Imam Ali (AS), in his will to his son Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'I advise you to be Godwary, O my son, and to abide by His orders, and to keep your heart alive with His remembrance.'10

1557 - ما يُلينُ القَلبَ‏

1557. WHAT SOFTENS THE HEART

5345. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله - لمّا شَكا إلَيهِ رجُلٌ قَساوَةَ قَلبِهِ - : إذا أرَدتَ أن يَلينَ قَلبُكَ فَأطعِمِ المِسكينَ وامسَحْ رَأسَ اليَتيمِ1

5345. The Prophet (SAWA), when a person complained to him about the hardness of his heart, said, 'If you want your heart to soften, feed the needy and stroke the head of orphans.'2

5346. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : عَوِّدُوا قُلوبَكُمُ الرِّقَّةَ ، وأكثِرُوا مِن التَّفَكُّرِ والبُكاءِ مِن خَشيَةِ اللَّهِ3

5346. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Accustom your hearts to being soft, and increase your contemplation and cry much due to fear of Allah.'4

5347. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام - وقد رُئيَ علَيهِ إزارٌ خَلَقٌ مَرقوعٌ فقيلَ لَهُ في ذلكَ - : يَخشَعُ لَهُ القَلبُ ، وتَذِلُّ بهِ النفسُ ، ويَقتَدي بهِ المُؤمنونَ5

5347. Imam Ali (AS), being seen wearing a wraparound cloth that was worn-out and patched, was asked about it, to which he replied, 'With it the heart becomes humble, the self is humiliated, and the believers follow its example.'6

5348. الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : تَعَرَّضْ لِرِقَّةِ القَلبِ بكَثرَةِ الذِّكرِ في‏الخَلَواتِ7

5348. Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'Embark upon softening the heart through constant remembrance [of Allah] in places of seclusion.'8

1558. WHAT POLISHES THE HEART

5349. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ هذهِ القُلوبَ تَصدَأُ كما يَصدأُ الحَديدُ إذا أصابَهُ الماءُ قيلَ : وما جَلاؤها ؟ قالَ : كَثرَةُ ذِكرِ المَوتِ، وتِلاوَةِ القرآنِ1

5349. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Verily these hearts rust like metal rusts when exposed to water.' He was asked, 'And what can polish them?' He said, 'Remembering death much, and reciting the Quran.'2

5350. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : جَلاءُ هذهِ القُلوبِ ذِكرُ اللَّهِ وتِلاوَةُ القرآنِ3

5350. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The polish of these hearts is the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Quran.'4

5351. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : أحْيِ قَلبَكَ بالمَوعِظَةِ ونَوِّرْهُ بالحِكمَةِ5

5351. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Revive your heart with exhortations...and enlighten it with wisdom.'6

5352. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : إنَّ للقُلوبِ صَداءً كصَداءِ النُّحاسِ ، فاجلُوها بالاستِغفارِ7

5352. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'Hearts have rust like the rust of copper so polish them with seeking forgiveness.'8

335. EMULATION (taqlid)

1559 - التَّقليدُ المَذمومُ‏

1559. DISPARAGED EMULATION

( وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعالَوْا إِلَى‏ ما أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ وَإِلَى الرَّسُولِ قالُوا حَسْبُنا ما وَجَدْنا عَلَيْهِ آبَاءَنا أَوَلَوْ كانَ آبَاؤُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ شَيْئاً وَلَا يَهْتَدُونَ)1

“And when they are told, “Come to what Allah has sent down and [come] to the Apostle” , they say,“Sufficient for us is what we have found our fathers following.” What, even if their fathers did not know anything and were not guided?”2

5353. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام - في قولِهِ تعالى‏ : (اتَّخَذُوا أحْبارَهُم ورُهْبانَهُم أرباباً مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ) - : واللَّهِ ما صَلَّوا لَهُم ولا صامُوا ، ولكنَّهُم أحَلُّوا لَهُم حَراماً ، وحَرَّموا علَيهِم حَلالاً فاتَّبَعُوهُم3

5353. Imam al-Sadiq (AS), with regard to Allah's verse in the Qur'an:“They have taken their scribes and their monks as lords besides Allah” 4 , said, 'By Allah, they did not pray to them nor did they fast for them, rather they permitted for them the prohibited and prohibited the permitted and people followed them.'5

5354. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام - لِرجُلٍ مِن أصحابِهِ - : لا تَكونَنَّ إمَّعةً ، تقولُ : أنا مَع الناسِ وأنا كَواحِدٍ مِن الناسِ !6

5354. Imam al-Sadiq (AS), speaking to one of his companions said, 'Do not be toady, saying, 'I am with the people and I am one of the people!'7

1560 - مَن يَجوزُ تَقليدُهُ‏

1560. THOSE WHO ARE PERMITTED TO BE EMULATED

5355. الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : فَأمّا مَن كانَ مِن الفُقَهاءِ صائناً لنفسِهِ حافِظاً لِدينِهِ مُخالِفاً على‏ هَواهُ مُطِيعاً لأمرِ مَولاهُ فلِلعَوامِّ أن يُقَلِّدُوهُ ، وذلكَ لا يكونُ إلّا بَعضَ فُقَهاءِ الشِّيعَةِ لا جَميعَهُم1

5355. Imam Hasan al-Askari (AS), 'Whoever from among the jurists safeguards himself, is protective of his religion, opposes his temptations, is obedient to his Master's commands, then the common people must emulate him, and this is only [applicable to] some of the Shia jurists, not all of them.'2
