سورة نوح (Nuh)

Sura 71

Aya 1 to 28

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

[Shakir] In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

[Pickthal] In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

[Yusufali] In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ أَنْ أَنْذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ {1}

[Shakir 71:1] Surely We sent Nuh to his people, saying: Warn your people before there come upon them a painful chastisement.

[Pickthal 71:1] Lo! We sent Noah unto his people (saying): Warn thy people ere the painful doom come unto them.

[Yusufali 71:1] We sent Noah to his People (with the Command): "Do thou warn thy People before there comes to them a grievous Penalty."

قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُبِينٌ {2}

[Shakir 71:2] He said: O my people! Surely I am a plain warner to you:

[Pickthal 71:2] He said: O my people! Lo! I am a plain warner unto you

[Yusufali 71:2] He said: "O my People! I am to you a Warner, clear and open:

أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ {3}

[Shakir 71:3] That you should serve Allah and be careful of (your duty to) Him and obey me:

[Pickthal 71:3] (Bidding you): Serve Allah and keep your duty unto Him and obey me,

[Yusufali 71:3] "That ye should worship Allah, fear Him and obey me:

يَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ مِنْ ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْ إِلَىٰ أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّىۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ اللَّهِ إِذَا جَاءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُ لَوْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ {4}

[Shakir 71:4] He will forgive you some of your faults and grant you a delay to an appointed term; surely the term of Allah when it comes is not postponed; did you but know!

[Pickthal 71:4] That He may forgive you somewhat of your sins and respite you to an appointed term. Lo! the term of Allah, when it cometh, cannot be delayed, if ye but knew.

[Yusufali 71:4] "So He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a stated Term: for when the Term given by Allah is accomplished, it cannot be put forward: if ye only knew."

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا {5}

[Shakir 71:5] He said: O my Lord! surely I have called my people by night and by day!

[Pickthal 71:5] He said: My Lord! Lo! I have called unto my people night and day

[Yusufali 71:5] He said: "O my Lord! I have called to my People night and day:

فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَائِي إِلَّا فِرَارًا {6}

[Shakir 71:6] But my call has only made them flee the more:

[Pickthal 71:6] But all my calling doth but add to their repugnance;

[Yusufali 71:6] "But my call only increases (their) flight (from the Right).

وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِمْ وَاسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا {7}

[Shakir 71:7] And whenever I have called them that Thou mayest forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, cover themselves with their garments, and persist and are puffed up with pride:

[Pickthal 71:7] And lo! whenever I call unto them that Thou mayst pardon them they thrust their fingers in their ears and cover themselves with their garments and persist (in their refusal) and magnify themselves in pride.

[Yusufali 71:7] "And every time I have called to them, that Thou mightest forgive them, they have (only) thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, grown obstinate, and given themselves up to arrogance.

ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًا {8}

[Shakir 71:8] Then surely I called to them aloud:

[Pickthal 71:8] And lo! I have called unto them aloud,

[Yusufali 71:8] "So I have called to them aloud;

ثُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْلَنْتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًا {9}

[Shakir 71:9] Then surely I spoke to them in public and I spoke to them in secret:

[Pickthal 71:9] And lo! I have made public proclamation unto them, and I have appealed to them in private.

[Yusufali 71:9] "Further I have spoken to them in public and secretly in private,

فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا {10}

[Shakir 71:10] Then I said, Ask forgiveness of your Lord, surely He is the most Forgiving:

[Pickthal 71:10] And I have said: Seek pardon of your Lord. Lo! He was ever Forgiving.

[Yusufali 71:10] "Saying, 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord; for He is Oft-Forgiving;

يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا {11}

[Shakir 71:11] He will send down upon you the cloud, pouring down abundance of rain:

[Pickthal 71:11] He will let loose the sky for you in plenteous rain,

[Yusufali 71:11] "'He will send rain to you in abundance;

وَيُمْدِدْكُمْ بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ وَيَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ أَنْهَارًا {12}

[Shakir 71:12] And help you with wealth and sons, and make for you gardens, and make for you rivers.

[Pickthal 71:12] And will help you with wealth and sons, and will assign unto you Gardens and will assign unto you rivers.

[Yusufali 71:12] "'Give you increase in wealth and sons; and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers (of flowing water).

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًا {13}

[Shakir 71:13] What is the matter with you that you fear not the greatness of Allah?

[Pickthal 71:13] What aileth you that ye hope not toward Allah for dignity

[Yusufali 71:13] "'What is the matter with you, that ye place not your hope for kindness and long-suffering in Allah,-

وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا {14}

[Shakir 71:14] And indeed He has created you through various grades:

[Pickthal 71:14] When He created you by (divers) stages?

[Yusufali 71:14] "'Seeing that it is He that has created you in diverse stages?

أَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ طِبَاقًا {15}

[Shakir 71:15] Do you not see how Allah has created the seven heavens ,~ one above another,

[Pickthal 71:15] See ye not how Allah hath created seven heavens in harmony,

[Yusufali 71:15] "'See ye not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another,

وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا {16}

[Shakir 71:16] And made the moon therein a light, and made the sun a lamp?

[Pickthal 71:16] And hath made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a lamp?

[Yusufali 71:16] "'And made the moon a light in their midst, and made the sun as a (Glorious) Lamp?

وَاللَّهُ أَنْبَتَكُمْ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًا {17}

[Shakir 71:17] And Allah has made you grow out of the earth as a growth:

[Pickthal 71:17] And Allah hath caused you to grow as a growth from the earth,

[Yusufali 71:17] "'And Allah has produced you from the earth growing (gradually),

ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًا {18}

[Shakir 71:18] Then He returns you to it, then will He bring you forth a (new) bringing forth:

[Pickthal 71:18] And afterward He maketh you return thereto, and He will bring you forth again, a (new) forthbringing.

[Yusufali 71:18] "'And in the End He will return you into the (earth), and raise you forth (again at the Resurrection)?

وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا {19}

[Shakir 71:19] And Allah has made for you the earth a wide expanse,

[Pickthal 71:19] And Allah hath made the earth a wide expanse for you

[Yusufali 71:19] "'And Allah has made the earth for you as a carpet (spread out),

لِتَسْلُكُوا مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًا {20}

[Shakir 71:20] That you may go along therein in wide paths.

[Pickthal 71:20] That ye may thread the valley-ways thereof.

[Yusufali 71:20] "'That ye may go about therein, in spacious roads.'"

قَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِي وَاتَّبَعُوا مَنْ لَمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ إِلَّا خَسَارًا {21}

[Shakir 71:21] Nuh said: My Lord! surely they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children have added to him nothing but loss.

[Pickthal 71:21] Noah said: My Lord! Lo! they have disobeyed me and followed one whose wealth and children increase him in naught save ruin;

[Yusufali 71:21] Noah said: "O my Lord! They have disobeyed me, but they follow (men) whose wealth and children give them no increase but only Loss.

وَمَكَرُوا مَكْرًا كُبَّارًا {22}

[Shakir 71:22] And they have planned a very great plan.

[Pickthal 71:22] And they have plotted a mighty plot,

[Yusufali 71:22] "And they have devised a tremendous Plot.

وَقَالُوا لَا تَذَرُنَّ آلِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًا {23}

[Shakir 71:23] And they say: By no means leave your gods, nor leave Wadd, nor Suwa; nor Yaghus, and Yauq and Nasr.

[Pickthal 71:23] And they have said: Forsake not your gods. Forsake not Wadd, nor Suwa', nor Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr.

[Yusufali 71:23] "And they have said (to each other), 'Abandon not your gods: Abandon neither Wadd nor Suwa', neither Yaguth nor Ya'uq, nor Nasr';-

وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا كَثِيرًا وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَالًا {24}

[Shakir 71:24] And indeed they have led astray many, and do not increase the unjust in aught but error.

[Pickthal 71:24] And they have led many astray, and Thou increasest the wrong-doers in naught save error.

[Yusufali 71:24] "They have already misled many; and grant Thou no increase to the wrong-doers but in straying (from their mark)."

مِمَّا خَطِيئَاتِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا فَأُدْخِلُوا نَارًا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا لَهُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ أَنْصَارًا {25}

[Shakir 71:25] Because of their wrongs they were drowned, then made to enter fire, so they did not find any helpers besides Allah.

[Pickthal 71:25] Because of their sins they were drowned, then made to enter a Fire. And they found they had no helpers in place of Allah.

[Yusufali 71:25] Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood), and were made to enter the Fire (of Punishment): and they found- in lieu of Allah- none to help them.

وَقَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا {26}

[Shakir 71:26] And Nuh said: My Lord! leave not upon the land any dweller from among the unbelievers:

[Pickthal 71:26] And Noah said: My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers in the land.

[Yusufali 71:26] And Noah, said: "O my Lord! Leave not of the Unbelievers, a single one on earth!

إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوا عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوا إِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًا {27}

[Shakir 71:27] For surely if Thou leave them they will lead astray Thy servants, and will not beget any but immoral, ungrateful (children)

[Pickthal 71:27] If Thou shouldst leave them, they will mislead Thy slaves and will beget none save lewd ingrates.

[Yusufali 71:27] "For, if Thou dost leave (any of) them, they will but mislead Thy devotees, and they will breed none but wicked ungrateful ones.

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِمَنْ دَخَلَ بَيْتِيَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَلَا تَزِدِ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارًا {28}

[Shakir 71:28] My Lord! forgive me and my parents and him who enters my house believing, and the believing men and the believing women; and do not increase the unjust in aught but destruction!

[Pickthal 71:28] My Lord! Forgive me and my parents and him who entereth my house believing, and believing men and believing women, and increase not the wrong-doers in aught save ruin.

[Yusufali 71:28] "O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, all who enter my house in Faith, and (all) believing men and believing women: and to the wrong-doers grant Thou no increase but in perdition!"

سورة الجن (Al-Jinn)

Sura 72

Aya 1 to 28

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

[Shakir] In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

[Pickthal] In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

[Yusufali] In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَقَالُوا إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا {1}

[Shakir 72:1] Say: It has been revealed to me that a party of the jinn listened, and they said: Surely we have heard a wonderful Quran,

[Pickthal 72:1] Say (O Muhammad): It is revealed unto me that a company of the Jinn gave ear, and they said: Lo! we have heard a marvellous Qur'an,

[Yusufali 72:1] Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns listened (to the Qur'an). They said, 'We have really heard a wonderful Recital!

يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ وَلَنْ نُشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَا أَحَدًا {2}

[Shakir 72:2] Guiding to the right way, so we believe in it, and we will not set up any one with our Lord:

[Pickthal 72:2] Which guideth unto righteousness, so we believe in it and we ascribe no partner unto our Lord.

[Yusufali 72:2] 'It gives guidance to the Right, and we have believed therein: we shall not join (in worship) any (gods) with our Lord.

وَأَنَّهُ تَعَالَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا اتَّخَذَ صَاحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا {3}

[Shakir 72:3] And that He-- exalted be the majesty of our Lord-- has not taken a consort, nor a son:

[Pickthal 72:3] And (we believe) that He - exalted be the glory of our Lord! - hath taken neither wife nor son,

[Yusufali 72:3] 'And Exalted is the Majesty of our Lord: He has taken neither a wife nor a son.

وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى اللَّهِ شَطَطًا {4}

[Shakir 72:4] And that the foolish amongst us used to forge extravagant things against Allah:

[Pickthal 72:4] And that the foolish one among us used to speak concerning Allah an atrocious lie.

[Yusufali 72:4] 'There were some foolish ones among us, who used to utter extravagant lies against Allah;

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّا أَنْ لَنْ تَقُولَ الْإِنْسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا {5}

[Shakir 72:5] And that we thought that men and jinn did not utter a lie against Allah:

[Pickthal 72:5] And lo! we had supposed that humankind and jinn would not speak a lie concerning Allah -

[Yusufali 72:5] 'But we do think that no man or spirit should say aught that untrue against Allah.

وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِنَ الْإِنْسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا {6}

[Shakir 72:6] And that persons from among men used to seek refuge with persons from among jinn, so they increased them in wrongdoing:

[Pickthal 72:6] And indeed (O Muhammad) individuals of humankind used to invoke the protection of individuals of the jinn, so that they increased them in revolt against Allah);

[Yusufali 72:6] 'True, there were persons among mankind who took shelter with persons among the Jinns, but they increased them in folly.

وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا كَمَا ظَنَنْتُمْ أَنْ لَنْ يَبْعَثَ اللَّهُ أَحَدًا {7}

[Shakir 72:7] And that they thought as you think, that Allah would not raise anyone:

[Pickthal 72:7] And indeed they supposed, even as ye suppose, that Allah would not raise anyone (from the dead) -

[Yusufali 72:7] 'And they (came to) think as ye thought, that Allah would not raise up any one (to Judgment).

وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا السَّمَاءَ فَوَجَدْنَاهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا {8}

[Shakir 72:8] And that we sought to reach heaven, but we found it filled with strong guards and flaming stars.

[Pickthal 72:8] And (the Jinn who had listened to the Qur'an said): We had sought the heaven but had found it filled with strong warders and meteors.

[Yusufali 72:8] 'And we pried into the secrets of heaven; but we found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires.

وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَاعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ فَمَنْ يَسْتَمِعِ الْآنَ يَجِدْ لَهُ شِهَابًا رَصَدًا {9}

[Shakir 72:9] And that we used to sit in some of the sitting-places thereof to steal a hearing, but he who would (try to) listen now would find a flame lying in wait for him:

[Pickthal 72:9] And we used to sit on places (high) therein to listen. But he who listeneth now findeth a flame in wait for him;

[Yusufali 72:9] 'We used, indeed, to sit there in (hidden) stations, to (steal) a hearing; but any who listen now will find a flaming fire watching him in ambush.

وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِي أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا {10}

[Shakir 72:10] And that we know not whether evil is meant for those who are on earth or whether their Lord means to bring them good:

[Pickthal 72:10] And we know not whether harm is boded unto all who are in the earth, or whether their Lord intendeth guidance for them.

[Yusufali 72:10] 'And we understand not whether ill is intended to those on earth, or whether their Lord (really) intends to guide them to right conduct.

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا الصَّالِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ كُنَّا طَرَائِقَ قِدَدًا {11}

[Shakir 72:11] And that some of us are good and others of us are below that: we are sects following different ways:

[Pickthal 72:11] And among us there are righteous folk and among us there are far from that. We are sects having different rules.

[Yusufali 72:11] 'There are among us some that are righteous, and some the contrary: we follow divergent paths.

وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّا أَنْ لَنْ نُعْجِزَ اللَّهَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَنْ نُعْجِزَهُ هَرَبًا {12}

[Shakir 72:12] And that we know that we cannot escape Allah in the earth, nor can we escape Him by flight:

[Pickthal 72:12] And we know that we cannot escape from Allah in the earth, nor can we escape by flight.

[Yusufali 72:12] 'But we think that we can by no means frustrate Allah throughout the earth, nor can we frustrate Him by flight.

وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا الْهُدَىٰ آمَنَّا بِهِ فَمَنْ يُؤْمِنْ بِرَبِّهِ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًا وَلَا رَهَقًا {13}

[Shakir 72:13] And that when we heard the guidance, we believed in it; so whoever believes in his Lord, he should neither fear loss nor being overtaken (by disgrace):

[Pickthal 72:13] And when we heard the guidance, we believed therein, and whoso believeth in his Lord, he feareth neither loss nor oppression.

[Yusufali 72:13] 'And as for us, since we have listened to the Guidance, we have accepted it: and any who believes in his Lord has no fear, either of a short (account) or of any injustice.

وَأَنَّا مِنَّا الْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا الْقَاسِطُونَ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ تَحَرَّوْا رَشَدًا {14}

[Shakir 72:14] And that some of us are those who submit, and some of us are the deviators; so whoever submits, these aim at the right way:

[Pickthal 72:14] And there are among us some who have surrendered (to Allah) and there are among us some who are unjust. And whoso hath surrendered to Allah, such have taken the right path purposefully.

[Yusufali 72:14] 'Amongst us are some that submit their wills (to Allah), and some that swerve from justice. Now those who submit their wills - they have sought out (the path) of right conduct:

وَأَمَّا الْقَاسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًا {15}

[Shakir 72:15] And as to the deviators, they are fuel of hell:

[Pickthal 72:15] And as for those who are unjust, they are firewood for hell.

[Yusufali 72:15] 'But those who swerve,- they are (but) fuel for Hell-fire'-

وَأَنْ لَوِ اسْتَقَامُوا عَلَى الطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَاهُمْ مَاءً غَدَقًا {16}

[Shakir 72:16] And that if they should keep to the (right) way, We would certainly give them to drink of abundant water,

[Pickthal 72:16] If they (the idolaters) tread the right path, We shall give them to drink of water in abundance

[Yusufali 72:16] (And Allah's Message is): "If they (the Pagans) had (only) remained on the (right) Way, We should certainly have bestowed on them Rain in abundance.

لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِۚ وَمَنْ يُعْرِضْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا {17}

[Shakir 72:17] So that We might try them with respect to it; and whoever turns aside from the reminder of his Lord, He will make him enter into an afflicting chastisement:

[Pickthal 72:17] That We may test them thereby, and whoso turneth away from the remembrance of his Lord; He will thrust him into ever-growing torment.

[Yusufali 72:17] "That We might try them by that (means). But if any turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will cause him to undergo a severe Penalty.

وَأَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا {18}

[Shakir 72:18] And that the mosques are Allah's, therefore call not upon any one with Allah:

[Pickthal 72:18] And the places of worship are only for Allah, so pray not unto anyone along with Allah.

[Yusufali 72:18] "And the places of worship are for Allah (alone): So invoke not any one along with Allah;

وَأَنَّهُ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَدْعُوهُ كَادُوا يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًا {19}

[Shakir 72:19] And that when the servant of Allah stood up calling upon Him, they wellnigh crowded him (to death).

[Pickthal 72:19] And when the slave of Allah stood up in prayer to Him, they crowded on him, almost stifling.

[Yusufali 72:19] "Yet when the Devotee of Allah stands forth to invoke Him, they just make round him a dense crowd."

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَدْعُو رَبِّي وَلَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ أَحَدًا {20}

[Shakir 72:20] Say: I only call upon my Lord, and I do not associate any one with Him.

[Pickthal 72:20] Say (unto them, O Muhammad): I pray unto Allah only, and ascribe unto Him no partner.

[Yusufali 72:20] Say: "I do no more than invoke my Lord, and I join not with Him any (false god)."

قُلْ إِنِّي لَا أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا رَشَدًا {21}

[Shakir 72:21] Say: I do not control for you evil or good.

[Pickthal 72:21] Say: Lo! I control not hurt nor benefit for you.

[Yusufali 72:21] Say: "It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to right conduct."

قُلْ إِنِّي لَنْ يُجِيرَنِي مِنَ اللَّهِ أَحَدٌ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِنْ دُونِهِ مُلْتَحَدًا {22}

[Shakir 72:22] Say: Surely no one can protect me against Allah, nor can I find besides Him any place of refuge:

[Pickthal 72:22] Say: Lo! none can protect me from Allah, nor can I find any refuge beside Him

[Yusufali 72:22] Say: "No one can deliver me from Allah (If I were to disobey Him), nor should I find refuge except in Him,

إِلَّا بَلَاغًا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِسَالَاتِهِۚ وَمَنْ يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَإِنَّ لَهُ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا {23}

[Shakir 72:23] (It is) only a delivering (of communications) from Allah and His messages; and whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger surely he shall have the fire of hell to abide therein for a long time.

[Pickthal 72:23] (Mine is) but conveyance (of the Truth) from Allah, and His messages; and whoso disobeyeth Allah and His messenger, lo! his is fire of hell, wherein such dwell for ever.

[Yusufali 72:23] "Unless I proclaim what I receive from Allah and His Messages: for any that disobey Allah and His Messenger,- for them is Hell: they shall dwell therein for ever."

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا رَأَوْا مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًا {24}

[Shakir 72:24] Until when they see what they are threatened with, then shall they know who is weaker in helpers and fewer in number.

[Pickthal 72:24] Till (the day) when they shall behold that which they are promised (they may doubt); but then they will know (for certain) who is weaker in allies and less in multitude.

[Yusufali 72:24] At length, when they see (with their own eyes) that which they are promised,- then will they know who it is that is weakest in (his) helper and least important in point of numbers.

قُلْ إِنْ أَدْرِي أَقَرِيبٌ مَا تُوعَدُونَ أَمْ يَجْعَلُ لَهُ رَبِّي أَمَدًا {25}

[Shakir 72:25] Say: I do not know whether that with which you are threatened be nigh or whether my Lord will appoint for it a term:

[Pickthal 72:25] Say (O Muhammad, unto the disbelievers): I know not whether that which ye are promised is nigh, or if my Lord hath set a distant term for it.

[Yusufali 72:25] Say: "I know not whether the (Punishment) which ye are promised is near, or whether my Lord will appoint for it a distant term.

عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِ أَحَدًا {26}

[Shakir 72:26] The Knower of the unseen! so He does not reveal His secrets to any,

[Pickthal 72:26] (He is) the Knower of the Unseen, and He revealeth unto none His secret,

[Yusufali 72:26] "He (alone) knows the Unseen, nor does He make any one acquainted with His Mysteries,-

إِلَّا مَنِ ارْتَضَىٰ مِنْ رَسُولٍ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْلُكُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ رَصَدًا {27}

[Shakir 72:27] Except to him whom He chooses as a messenger; for surely He makes a guard to march before him and after him,

[Pickthal 72:27] Save unto every messenger whom He hath chosen, and then He maketh a guard to go before him and a guard behind him

[Yusufali 72:27] "Except a messenger whom He has chosen: and then He makes a band of watchers march before him and behind him,

لِيَعْلَمَ أَنْ قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عَدَدًا {28}

[Shakir 72:28] So that He may know that they have truly delivered the messages of their Lord, and He encompasses what is with them and He records the number of all things.

[Pickthal 72:28] That He may know that they have indeed conveyed the messages of their Lord. He surroundeth all their doings, and He keepeth count of all things.

[Yusufali 72:28] "That He may know that they have (truly) brought and delivered the Messages of their Lord: and He surrounds (all the mysteries) that are with them, and takes account of every single thing."

سورة المزمل (Al-Muzzammil)

Sura 73

Aya 1 to 20

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

[Shakir] In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

[Pickthal] In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

[Yusufali] In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ {1}

[Shakir 73:1] O you who have wrapped up in your garments!

[Pickthal 73:1] O thou wrapped up in thy raiment!

[Yusufali 73:1] O thou folded in garments!

قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا {2}

[Shakir 73:2] Rise to pray in the night except a little,

[Pickthal 73:2] Keep vigil the night long, save a little -

[Yusufali 73:2] Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,-

نِصْفَهُ أَوِ انْقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًا {3}

[Shakir 73:3] Half of it, or lessen it a little,

[Pickthal 73:3] A half thereof, or abate a little thereof

[Yusufali 73:3] Half of it,- or a little less,

أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا {4}

[Shakir 73:4] Or add to it, and recite the Quran as it ought to be recited.

[Pickthal 73:4] Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure,

[Yusufali 73:4] Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones.

إِنَّا سَنُلْقِي عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيلًا {5}

[Shakir 73:5] Surely We will make to light upon you a weighty Word.

[Pickthal 73:5] For we shall charge thee with a word of weight.

[Yusufali 73:5] Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message.

إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ اللَّيْلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطْئًا وَأَقْوَمُ قِيلًا {6}

[Shakir 73:6] Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech.

[Pickthal 73:6] Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain.

[Yusufali 73:6] Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise).

إِنَّ لَكَ فِي النَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِيلًا {7}

[Shakir 73:7] Surely you have in the day time a long occupation.

[Pickthal 73:7] Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business.

[Yusufali 73:7] True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties:

وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيلًا {8}

[Shakir 73:8] And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion.

[Pickthal 73:8] So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion -

[Yusufali 73:8] But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly.

رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَاتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلًا {9}

[Shakir 73:9] The Lord of the East and the West-- there is no god but He-- therefore take Him for a protector.

[Pickthal 73:9] Lord of the East and the West; there is no Allah save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender -

[Yusufali 73:9] (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs.

وَاصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَاهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا {10}

[Shakir 73:10] And bear patiently what they say and avoid them with a becoming avoidance.

[Pickthal 73:10] And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking.

[Yusufali 73:10] And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity).

وَذَرْنِي وَالْمُكَذِّبِينَ أُولِي النَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِيلًا {11}

[Shakir 73:11] And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little.

[Pickthal 73:11] Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile.

[Yusufali 73:11] And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while.

إِنَّ لَدَيْنَا أَنْكَالًا وَجَحِيمًا {12}

[Shakir 73:12] Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire,

[Pickthal 73:12] Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire,

[Yusufali 73:12] With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them),

وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًا {13}

[Shakir 73:13] And food that chokes and a painful punishment,

[Pickthal 73:13] And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom

[Yusufali 73:13] And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous.

يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الْأَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَهِيلًا {14}

[Shakir 73:14] On the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains shall become (as) heaps of sand let loose.

[Pickthal 73:14] On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand.

[Yusufali 73:14] One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down.

إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَاهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا {15}

[Shakir 73:15] Surely We have sent to you a Messenger, a witness against you, as We sent a messenger to Firon.

[Pickthal 73:15] Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger.

[Yusufali 73:15] We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh.

فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ الرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا {16}

[Shakir 73:16] But Firon disobeyed the messenger, so We laid on him a violent hold.

[Pickthal 73:16] But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip.

[Yusufali 73:16] But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment.

فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِنْ كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ الْوِلْدَانَ شِيبًا {17}

[Shakir 73:17] How, then, will you guard yourselves, if you disbelieve, on the day which shall make children grey-headed?

[Pickthal 73:17] Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey,

[Yusufali 73:17] Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?-

السَّمَاءُ مُنْفَطِرٌ بِهِۚ كَانَ وَعْدُهُ مَفْعُولًا {18}

[Shakir 73:18] The heaven shall rend asunder thereby; His promise is ever brought to fulfillment.

[Pickthal 73:18] The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled.

[Yusufali 73:18] Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished.

إِنَّ هَٰذِهِ تَذْكِرَةٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ سَبِيلًا {19}

[Shakir 73:19] Surely this is a reminder, then let him, who will take the way to his Lord.

[Pickthal 73:19] Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord.

[Yusufali 73:19] Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) path to his Lord!

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَىٰ مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ اللَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ وَطَائِفَةٌ مِنَ الَّذِينَ مَعَكَۚ وَاللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَۚ عَلِمَ أَنْ لَنْ تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِۚ عَلِمَ أَنْ سَيَكُونُ مِنْكُمْ مَرْضَىٰۙ وَآخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِۙ وَآخَرُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُۚ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَقْرِضُوا اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًاۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لِأَنْفُسِكُمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًاۚ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ {20}

[Shakir 73:20] Surely your Lord knows that you pass in prayer nearly two-thirds of the night, and (sometimes) half of it, and (sometimes) a third of it, and (also) a party of those with you; and Allah measures the night and the day. He knows that you are not able to do it, so He has turned to you (mercifully), therefore read what is easy of the Quran. He knows that there must be among you sick, and others who travel in the land seeking of the bounty of Allah, and others who fight in Allah's way, therefore read as much of it as is easy (to you), and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and offer to Allah a goodly gift, and whatever of good you send on beforehand for yourselves, you will find it with Allah; that is best and greatest in reward; and ask forgiveness of Allah; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

[Pickthal 73:20] Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah's bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor-due, and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you for your souls, ye will find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

[Yusufali 73:20] Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy): read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah's bounty; yet others fighting in Allah's Cause, read ye, therefore, as much of the Qur'an as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah's Presence,- yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Interpretation

1. Bringing the Pagan Religion to Life

The words of Fatimah in this part reach a higher summit and possess stronger excitement and compassion.

She is vacated that once again the rules of paganism are coming to life, because in paganism females were absolutely refused inheritance.

Islam came and made this point invalid, and made all Muslim relatives partners and sharers in inheritance. As such it is not only the matter of Fadak under consideration. What is being considered in the first place is the danger of the revival of pagan customs and the effacement of Islamic customs. She therefore severely reproaches them in this section and places them under a shower of her censures.

The strangest thing of all was that they did this so hastily that anyone could see that the matter of Fadak was not a simple one. They didn’t even wait until their feet were firmly planted in the caliphate, or as they say: “The water to fall down from the water mill” before they thought of this oppressive transgression. And this is an important point in understanding the depth of this great conspiracy.

2. A Reference to the Enemies’ Reasons

The Prophet’s daughter - this great orator and well-versed judge - then implicitly goes on to their reasons, saying that they were claiming the messenger of God had said, “we prophets leave absolutely no inheritance as a memorial.”

Then she went on with a reasonable knock-down reply, and notes witness and examples from the generalities and particulars of the Quran, and by mentioning a few verses of the book proves that this false tradition must be exposed to all for what it is.

3. Fatimah (s.a.) Closes All of Their Ways of Escape

This great-learned lady so attacks the opponent with weapons of reason that no way of escape is left open for him.

She says: “If your excuse is that false tradition which says “we prophets leave no inheritance”, I give you its reply from Quranic verses, and if your excuse is that we are prohibited inheritance, then know that all children inherit from their parents. The only person excluded from this rule is he who is not related to and alike in religious beliefs with the father.

This means that non-Muslim children never inherit from their Muslim parents. According to your opinion, “is the religion of my father different from mine?!” And if it is the sediments of the pagan commandments in your brain which says, “A girl has no share in inheritance” these imaginary, ridiculous beliefs were removed with the rising of the sun of Islam, and there is no way to return to the dark night after the dawn.

4. Are you more familiar with the Quran than the family of its voice (S)?

Fatimah, this brave lady also closes this road before them in which they could say; “We understand this and that from the Quran.” She asks them; if Where in the Quran? “And with which interpretation?” “Who is more worthy of doing this than my cousin Ali who was raised in the arms of the Quran’s voice and was one of his secretaries, and who heard the Quran and its interpretation from the lips of the Prophet himself?”

To begin with, the Quran was revealed in our home.

In short, in one part she points to the matter of the inheritance of Solomon from his father David and John from his father Zachariah, of whom all were Prophets saying - in contrast to this false tradition, the Quran stipulates that they inherited from each other and we know that any tradition which opposes the Quran falls from the degree of validity.

Then she takes advantage of the generalities of the Quran which say: “Offsprings, both girls and boys inherit from their father” and “all relatives have a portion in inheritance according to the Islamic laws and the categories ascertained in inheritance.” She then says, could this single tradition, which is contrary to both the general and particular verses of the Quran have any worth in a just Islamic court, and have as much value as the size of a pin-head? She then counts and denies all of the other roads, such as the important impediments to inheritance.

5. Now that it is such, it is all yours

Then the honorable daughter of the Prophet (S), this self-sacrificing lady, adds, so that they will not think she has some sort of affection for Fadak as a worldly possession, but as a divine aim: “Now that it is so, take it all, and do anything you are able to but know that you have a great court ahead of you that possesses many differences from the courts of this world. There the judge is God and your claimant in that court will be the prophet of Islam himself, and the fixed date for this court is the resurrection day “Yum-al-Borouz”, the day that all hidden things will be made known.”

If you have prepared a reply for that day ‘Bismillah’ (be my guest), and if not prepare yourself for God’s punishment.

On that day it is certain that you will be regretful, but this regret will certainly have no benefit for you, because the record of deeds will be closed and there is no way to return to the past.

ثم رمت بطرفها نحو الانصار، فقالت :

یا مَعْشَرَ النَّقیبَةِ وَ اَعْضادَ الْمِلَّةِ وَ حَضَنَةَ الْاِسْلامِ! ما هذِهِ الْغَمیزَةُ فی حَقّی وَ السِّنَةُ عَنْ ظُلامَتی؟ اَما كانَ رَسُولُ‏اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَیْهِ وَ الِهِ اَبی یَقُولُ: «اَلْمَرْءُ یُحْفَظُ فی وُلْدِهِ»، سَرْعانَ ما اَحْدَثْتُمْ وَ عَجْلانَ ذا اِهالَةٍ، وَ لَكُمْ طاقَةٌ بِما اُحاوِلُ، وَ قُوَّةٌ عَلى ما اَطْلُبُ وَ اُزاوِلُ

اَتَقُولُونَ ماتَ مُحَمَّدٌ؟ فَخَطْبٌ جَلیلٌ اِسْتَوْسَعَ وَ هْنُهُ، وَاسْتَنْهَرَ فَتْقُهُ، وَ انْفَتَقَ رَتْقُهُ، وَ اُظْلِمَتِ الْاَرْضُ لِغَیْبَتِهِ، وَ كُسِفَتِ الشَّمْسُ وَ الْقَمَرُ وَ انْتَثَرَتِ النُّجُومُ لِمُصیبَتِهِ، وَ اَكْدَتِ الْامالُ، وَ خَشَعَتِ الْجِبالُ، وَ اُضیعَ الْحَریمُ، وَ اُزیلَتِ الْحُرْمَةُ عِنْدَ مَماتِهِ

فَتِلْكَ وَاللَّهِ النَّازِلَةُ الْكُبْرى وَ الْمُصیبَةُ الْعُظْمى، لامِثْلُها نازِلَةٌ، وَ لا بائِقَةٌ عاجِلَةٌ اُعْلِنَ بِها، كِتابُ اللَّهِ جَلَّ ثَناوهُ فی اَفْنِیَتِكُمْ، وَ فی مُمْساكُمْ وَ مُصْبِحِكُمْ، یَهْتِفُ فی اَفْنِیَتِكُمْ هُتافاً وَ صُراخاً وَ تِلاوَةً وَ اَلْحاناً، وَ لَقَبْلَهُ ما حَلَّ بِاَنْبِیاءِ اللَّهِ وَ رُسُلِهِ، حُكْمٌ فَصْلٌ وَ قَضاءٌ حَتْمٌ

« وَ ما مُحَمَّدٌ اِلاَّ رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ اَفَاِنْ ماتَ اَوْ قُتِلَ انْقَلَبْتُمْ عَلى اَعْقابِكُمْ وَ مَنْ یَنْقَلِبْ عَلى عَقِبَیْهِ فَلَنْ یَضُرَّ اللَّهَ شَیْئاً وَ سَیَجْزِى اللَّهُ شَیْئاً وَ سَیَجْزِى اللَّهُ الشَّاكِرینَ ».

ایهاً بَنی‏قیلَةَ! ءَ اُهْضَمُ تُراثَ اَبی وَ اَنْتُمْ بِمَرْأى مِنّی وَ مَسْمَعٍ وَ مُنْتَدى وَ مَجْمَعٍ، تَلْبَسُكُمُ الدَّعْوَةُ وَ تَشْمَلُكُمُ الْخُبْرَةُ، وَ اَنْتُمْ ذَوُو الْعَدَدِ وَ الْعُدَّةِ وَ الْاَداةِ وَ الْقُوَّةِ، وَ عِنْدَكُمُ السِّلاحُ وَ الْجُنَّةُ، تُوافیكُمُ الدَّعْوَةُ فَلا تُجیبُونَ، وَ تَأْتیكُمُ الصَّرْخَةُ فَلا تُغیثُونَ، وَ اَنْتُمْ مَوْصُوفُونَ بِالْكِفاحِ، مَعْرُوفُونَ بِالْخَیْرِ وَ الصَّلاحِ، وَ النُّخْبَةُ الَّتی انْتُخِبَتْ، وَ الْخِیَرَةُ الَّتِی اخْتیرَتْ لَنا اَهْلَ الْبَیْتِ

قاتَلْتُمُ الْعَرَبَ، وَ تَحَمَّلْتُمُ الْكَدَّ وَ التَّعَبَ، وَ ناطَحْتُمُ الْاُمَمَ، وَ كافَحْتُمُ الْبُهَمَ، لا نَبْرَحُ اَوْ تَبْرَحُونَ، نَأْمُرُكُمْ فَتَأْتَمِرُونَ، حَتَّى اِذا دارَتْ بِنا رَحَى الْاِسْلامِ، وَ دَرَّ حَلَبُ الْاَیَّامِ، وَ خَضَعَتْ نُعْرَةُ الشِّرْكِ، وَ سَكَنَتْ فَوْرَةُ الْاِفْكِ، وَ خَمَدَتْ نیرانُ الْكُفْرِ، وَ هَدَأَتْ دَعْوَةُ الْهَرَجِ، وَ اسْتَوْسَقَ نِظامُ الدّینِ، فَاَنَّى حِزْتُمْ بَعْدَ الْبَیانِ، وَاَسْرَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ الْاِعْلانِ، وَ نَكَصْتُمْ بَعْدَ الْاِقْدامِ، وَاَشْرَكْتُمْ بَعْدَ الْایمانِ؟

بُوساً لِقَوْمٍ نَكَثُوا اَیْمانَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ، وَ هَمُّوا بِاِخْراجِ الرَّسُولِ وَ هُمْ بَدَوكُمْ اَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ، اَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ فَاللَّهُ اَحَقُّ اَنْ تَخْشَوْهُ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُومِنینَ

اَلا، وَ قَدْ أَرى اَنْ قَدْ اَخْلَدْتُمْ اِلَى الْخَفْضِ، وَ اَبْعَدْتُمْ مَنْ هُوَ اَحَقُّ بِالْبَسْطِ وَ الْقَبْضِ، وَ خَلَوْتُمْ بِالدَّعَةِ، وَ نَجَوْتُمْ بِالضّیقِ مِنَ السَّعَةِ، فَمَجَجْتُمْ ما وَعَبْتُمْ، وَ دَسَعْتُمُ الَّذى تَسَوَّغْتُمْ، فَاِنْ تَكْفُرُوا اَنْتُمْ وَ مَنْ فِی الْاَرْضِ جَمیعاً فَاِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِیٌّ حَمیدٌ

اَلا، وَ قَدْ قُلْتُ ما قُلْتُ هذا عَلى مَعْرِفَةٍ مِنّی بِالْخِذْلَةِ الَّتی خامَرْتُكُمْ، وَ الْغَدْرَةِ الَّتِی اسْتَشْعَرَتْها قُلُوبُكُمْ، وَ لكِنَّها فَیْضَةُ النَّفْسِ، وَ نَفْثَةُ الْغَیْظِ، وَ حَوَزُ الْقَناةِ، وَ بَثَّةُ الصَّدْرِ، وَ تَقْدِمَةُ الْحُجَّةِ، فَدُونَكُمُوها فَاحْتَقِبُوها دَبِرَةَ الظَّهْرِ، نَقِبَةَ الْخُفِّ، باقِیَةَ الْعارِ، مَوْسُومَةً بِغَضَبِ الْجَبَّارِ وَ شَنارِ الْاَبَدِ، مَوْصُولَةً بِنارِ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةِ الَّتی تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْاَفْئِدَةِ

فَبِعَیْنِ اللَّهِ ما تَفْعَلُونَ، وَ سَیَعْلَمُ الَّذینَ ظَلَمُوا اَىَّ مُنْقَلَبٍ یَنْقَلِبُونَ، وَ اَنَا اِبْنَةُ نَذیرٍ لَكُمْ بَیْنَ یَدَىْ عَذابٌ شَدیدٌ، فَاعْمَلُوا اِنَّا عامِلُونَ، وَ انْتَظِرُوا اِنَّا مُنْتَظِرُونَ

English Rendering

Then the Lady of Islam (a.s) spoke to the group of Ansars going on with her speech in an expressive, firm and pounding tone, saying thus; “O’ Gentlemen, and O’ mighty upper arms of the nation and friends of Islam! What is this connivance of yours against my indisputable right? And what is this negligence you exhibit in response to the injustice that has been done to me? Didn’t my father the Prophet of Islam say:

“A person’s respect must be kept in regard to his children.”

How quickly you changed the conditions and how swiftly you took steps towards the deviated path, while you have the ability to administer my justice, and you have sufficient power for that which I say:

Are you saying: Mohammad has left the world - and with his death everything has come to an end, and his household must be forgotten and his Sunnah trampled?

Yes, his death was a painful blow and a tragedy for the Islamic world. It is a grave disaster that brought down the dust of sorrow on everyone, and every day the fissure becomes clearer and its break more extensive and its amplitude increased. The earth darkens because of his absence, and the stars lack brilliance because of the disaster; hopes turned into despair. Mountains became unstable; the honor of persons was trampled, and with his death no respect remains. I swear to God, this is an immense event and a great tragedy and an irreparable loss. But don’t forget it the Prophet left, the magnificent Quran had previously reported of it; the very Quran which is continually present in your homes, morning and night, loudly and exclaiming or quietly and read to us with various tones. The prophets previous to him were also confronted with this reality, because death is Godly command with infringements being unacceptable.

Yes, the Quran had said explicitly:

“And Mohammad is no more than an apostle: the apostles have already passed away before him; if then he dies or is killed, will you turn back upon your heels? And whoever turns back upon his heels, he will by no means does harm to Allah in the least; and Allah will reward the grateful.” (3:143)

Strange! O’ children of Qila1 must my inheritance be trampled while you see and hear clearly, and the reality is spoken of in your meetings and gatherings, and its news reaches you easily and you still sit in silence?

Even though you have ample personnel and extensive power, equipment, weapons and armor, you hear my call and do not answer?! My shout is arousing suspicion among you and you don’t react to it? This is when you are the idiom of courage, and are known for your charity and goodness, and you are the elect of the tribes and sects.

You battled the Arab infidels, and bore the sufferings and hardships. You routed the stubborn and you fought with great warriors. And it was you who were constantly moving along with us, and were in our line you submitted to our commands and were ready for our orders.

This until the mill of Islam began rotating on the axis of our families’ existence, and milk began flowing in the breasts of mother time. The clamors of polytheism were stifled in throats and the flames of falsehood died down, the fire of infidelity was extinguished, and the call to diversion was halted, while the discipline of religion was affirmed.

Then why after all of those explanations from the Quran and the Holy Prophet of Islam have you remained perplexed today? Why do you keep the realities hidden after they have been clarified to you? And why have you broken your pacts, and after faith you have taken the road of polytheism?

“What! Will you not fight a people, who broke their oaths and aimed at the expulsion of the apostle, and they attacked you first; do you fear them? But Allah is most deserving that you fear Him, if you are believers.” (9:13)

Be aware, I see it thus that you have turned to comfort and have become Pleasure-Seekers. You have abandoned the one person more worthy than all for the leadership and administration of the Muslims’ affairs. You have leaned in a quiet corner in ease and self-cherishing, turning to the expanse of indifference from the pressures of the narrow pass of responsibilities.

Yes, what you had in you of faith and awareness you have thrown out, and you have with difficulty regulated the putrid water you had drank.

But don’t forget, God says:

“If you are ungrateful, you and those on earth all together, most surely Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praised.” (14:8)

Know and be aware that I have said what I must say, while I know well that the forsaking of right (Haqq) is mixed with your flesh, and breach of promise has fallen over your heart. But since my heart was heavy with sorrow - and I felt a strong sense of responsibility, some of my inner griefs poured out, and the sorrow that swelled within my breast came out (so I could complete my ultimatum to you and let there be no excuse left for anyone).

Now that it is so, this steed of the Caliphate, and that Fadak, all are yours. Hold on tightly and don’t let go. But know that this is not a steed with which you may proceed in your own way; its back is wounded and its hoofs are split! The brand of disgrace is upon it and the wrath of God is its sign. Eternal disgrace is accompanied by it and in the end it will join the blazing fires of God’s indignation.

Don’t forget that what you do is in God’s presence.

“They who act unjustly shall know to what final place of turning they will turn back…” (26:227)

“And say to those who do not believe: Who gave you a prognosis in the face of severe torment? Do what you are able to do.”

“And say to those who do not believe: Act according to your state, surely we too are acting. And wait surely we are waiting also.” (11:121-122)

Interpretation

1. The effective role of the Ansars in the advance of Islamic objectives

The lady of Islam (a.s) in this section of her speech describes the ‘Ansars’ clan as an elect group, the powerful forearm of Islam and devoted friend of the Prophet of Islam. She then expresses her gratefulness for their efforts at the beginning of the Prophet’s entrance to Medina, and even before that in the way of Islam.

Yes, really, the Ansars played a very effective part in the promotion of Islam, during war and peace, in the beginning and in the end, in all the stages and with all of what they requested less than the Mohajereen.

If things would have fallen into their hands maybe the history of Islam would have traversed a more enlightened course. Of course, among the Mohajereen there were some devoted persons who never neglected any self-sacrifice or generosity. However, with all of that influence, the political players among them completely changed the situation.

2. Fatimah places them under the shower of her censures

The Lady of Islam’s surprise is here:

Why have these powerful forearms and old friends of the Prophet (S) placed the seal of silence on their lips in the face of this injustice that they allowed in relation to their family? With their silence they gave their endorsement of these cruelties and did not keep the Prophet’s respect as regards his family. Most important of all, in that face of the change in the axis of the caliphate, after a short confrontation and that in their own favor: They sympathized, cooperated and condoled, in exchange for the right to silence that they received. This was an unforgivable error!

3. With the death of the Prophet (S) Islam does not die

The great Qur’an on the one hand, and the Prophet himself on the other, reported the fact that the Islamic religion is not upright because of a person. It is a religion, eternal until the very last day, and does not cease with the death of the prophet. This is because it was a revolution based on a school (of thought), a heavenly and Godly school, a school harmonious with human needs throughout history, and such a school must remain.

But despite all this, a short-sighted imperceptive group imagined that with the painful blow and heart-rendering tragedy that was done to the Islamic world at the death of the prophet of Islam, and with the vacuum that appeared from the absence of this great leader in the perimeters of Islam; the exordium of Islam had been read, and its scroll had been rolled up! And for this very reason they remained silent before the clamors of paganism.

Fatimah (s.a.) shouts, and reminds them of the Quranic verses that speak of the permanence and eternity of Islam! She awakens the negligent from careless sleep and introduces the Muslims to their heavy responsibilities in that extremely sensitive time.

4. Why do you sit silently in the face of the violation of Islamic commandments?

In another high point of her speech she intensely reproaches the Ansar saying; “Your silence in the Fadak incident, an incident that is a link from a series of chain-like deviations, and a spark from an extant flame and a drop from one vast current will end in the revival of the Anti-Islamic specter.” The people say: “if it is really true that Islamic law is just, why isn’t it enforced in the case of the closest relatives of the Prophet?” “In a place where they violate such an indisputable right and you endorse it with your silence, the violation of the rest of the Islamic laws will not be difficult.”

“You should think of this affair as a current not as a localized, one-sided incident, and calculate which other incidents are hidden behind this incident? My agitation and clamor is for this very reason! Don’t think that your rising for the aid of one who is oppressed like me will create a split in the Islamic community. But rather on the contrary, your silence puts everything under question. If you say that you don’t have the power it is a lie. Abundant resources were made available to you from the beginning and now they are more plentiful. Despite this, why do you discard the explicit Quranic verse which says, “Rise to battle the violators of an oath.” And instead of fearing God you fear them.”

5. The prevalence of the spirit of “welfare-seeking”

The prevalence of the spirit of“welfare-seeking” 2

This great teacher, in another high point reaches into the depths of their souls and pulls out the primary reason for this silence, saying, “The matter is that the spirit of welfare-seeking has prevailed over you, you have given yourself to the desire for tranquility. And even though you see with your own eyes that they have put aside the one person who is more worthy than anyone for the caliphate, you remain silent?

Yes, a true revolution is a forerunner as long as its individuals keep their revolutionary spirit, and the inclinations for welfare-seeking don’t prevail over them. If not they will submit in the face of difficulties, and they pass by indifferently all bitter responsibility, creating incidents, and the revolution is extinguished.”

6. With this spirit I know you are unable to do anything!

This courageous lady with her deep perception tells of future events. And in another high point in this section she speaks to the ‘Ansar’ saying; my aim is to deliver my ultimatum, and other than that I have no hope in you. Where you have remained silent in the same way in regard to ‘Fadak’. But my words today will be recorded in the history of Islam and future comers will judge. In addition to this I also wanted to open the knots in my heart and pour out the blood in my breast so that everyone would know of my tormenting pain!

7. Be ready for painful events

The heroine of Islam also notifies them, “Don’t think that this silence and desire for your own welfare, becoming bystanders and indifferent, will end cheaply for you. You will taste its bitter fruit in this world in the form of tyrannical governments - such as Bani Umayeh and Bani Abbas - who have no mercy on your future generations, and are not for Islam and the Quran.

“In addition, in Gods’ great court on resurrection day, you will have to pay its atonement.”

8. He gave a prognosis and I also given a prognosis!

Fatimah, the broken-hearted lady and the eminently-positioned daughter of the prophet, in the last part of her speech speaks the same words that the divine prophets said against mutinous groups. She gives them a prognosis, saying;

“You should be waiting, we are also waiting.”

You are waiting for greater pressures to be brought upon the family of the Prophet (S); we are also awaiting God’s punishment for you!

Interpretation

1. Bringing the Pagan Religion to Life

The words of Fatimah in this part reach a higher summit and possess stronger excitement and compassion.

She is vacated that once again the rules of paganism are coming to life, because in paganism females were absolutely refused inheritance.

Islam came and made this point invalid, and made all Muslim relatives partners and sharers in inheritance. As such it is not only the matter of Fadak under consideration. What is being considered in the first place is the danger of the revival of pagan customs and the effacement of Islamic customs. She therefore severely reproaches them in this section and places them under a shower of her censures.

The strangest thing of all was that they did this so hastily that anyone could see that the matter of Fadak was not a simple one. They didn’t even wait until their feet were firmly planted in the caliphate, or as they say: “The water to fall down from the water mill” before they thought of this oppressive transgression. And this is an important point in understanding the depth of this great conspiracy.

2. A Reference to the Enemies’ Reasons

The Prophet’s daughter - this great orator and well-versed judge - then implicitly goes on to their reasons, saying that they were claiming the messenger of God had said, “we prophets leave absolutely no inheritance as a memorial.”

Then she went on with a reasonable knock-down reply, and notes witness and examples from the generalities and particulars of the Quran, and by mentioning a few verses of the book proves that this false tradition must be exposed to all for what it is.

3. Fatimah (s.a.) Closes All of Their Ways of Escape

This great-learned lady so attacks the opponent with weapons of reason that no way of escape is left open for him.

She says: “If your excuse is that false tradition which says “we prophets leave no inheritance”, I give you its reply from Quranic verses, and if your excuse is that we are prohibited inheritance, then know that all children inherit from their parents. The only person excluded from this rule is he who is not related to and alike in religious beliefs with the father.

This means that non-Muslim children never inherit from their Muslim parents. According to your opinion, “is the religion of my father different from mine?!” And if it is the sediments of the pagan commandments in your brain which says, “A girl has no share in inheritance” these imaginary, ridiculous beliefs were removed with the rising of the sun of Islam, and there is no way to return to the dark night after the dawn.

4. Are you more familiar with the Quran than the family of its voice (S)?

Fatimah, this brave lady also closes this road before them in which they could say; “We understand this and that from the Quran.” She asks them; if Where in the Quran? “And with which interpretation?” “Who is more worthy of doing this than my cousin Ali who was raised in the arms of the Quran’s voice and was one of his secretaries, and who heard the Quran and its interpretation from the lips of the Prophet himself?”

To begin with, the Quran was revealed in our home.

In short, in one part she points to the matter of the inheritance of Solomon from his father David and John from his father Zachariah, of whom all were Prophets saying - in contrast to this false tradition, the Quran stipulates that they inherited from each other and we know that any tradition which opposes the Quran falls from the degree of validity.

Then she takes advantage of the generalities of the Quran which say: “Offsprings, both girls and boys inherit from their father” and “all relatives have a portion in inheritance according to the Islamic laws and the categories ascertained in inheritance.” She then says, could this single tradition, which is contrary to both the general and particular verses of the Quran have any worth in a just Islamic court, and have as much value as the size of a pin-head? She then counts and denies all of the other roads, such as the important impediments to inheritance.

5. Now that it is such, it is all yours

Then the honorable daughter of the Prophet (S), this self-sacrificing lady, adds, so that they will not think she has some sort of affection for Fadak as a worldly possession, but as a divine aim: “Now that it is so, take it all, and do anything you are able to but know that you have a great court ahead of you that possesses many differences from the courts of this world. There the judge is God and your claimant in that court will be the prophet of Islam himself, and the fixed date for this court is the resurrection day “Yum-al-Borouz”, the day that all hidden things will be made known.”

If you have prepared a reply for that day ‘Bismillah’ (be my guest), and if not prepare yourself for God’s punishment.

On that day it is certain that you will be regretful, but this regret will certainly have no benefit for you, because the record of deeds will be closed and there is no way to return to the past.

ثم رمت بطرفها نحو الانصار، فقالت :

یا مَعْشَرَ النَّقیبَةِ وَ اَعْضادَ الْمِلَّةِ وَ حَضَنَةَ الْاِسْلامِ! ما هذِهِ الْغَمیزَةُ فی حَقّی وَ السِّنَةُ عَنْ ظُلامَتی؟ اَما كانَ رَسُولُ‏اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَیْهِ وَ الِهِ اَبی یَقُولُ: «اَلْمَرْءُ یُحْفَظُ فی وُلْدِهِ»، سَرْعانَ ما اَحْدَثْتُمْ وَ عَجْلانَ ذا اِهالَةٍ، وَ لَكُمْ طاقَةٌ بِما اُحاوِلُ، وَ قُوَّةٌ عَلى ما اَطْلُبُ وَ اُزاوِلُ

اَتَقُولُونَ ماتَ مُحَمَّدٌ؟ فَخَطْبٌ جَلیلٌ اِسْتَوْسَعَ وَ هْنُهُ، وَاسْتَنْهَرَ فَتْقُهُ، وَ انْفَتَقَ رَتْقُهُ، وَ اُظْلِمَتِ الْاَرْضُ لِغَیْبَتِهِ، وَ كُسِفَتِ الشَّمْسُ وَ الْقَمَرُ وَ انْتَثَرَتِ النُّجُومُ لِمُصیبَتِهِ، وَ اَكْدَتِ الْامالُ، وَ خَشَعَتِ الْجِبالُ، وَ اُضیعَ الْحَریمُ، وَ اُزیلَتِ الْحُرْمَةُ عِنْدَ مَماتِهِ

فَتِلْكَ وَاللَّهِ النَّازِلَةُ الْكُبْرى وَ الْمُصیبَةُ الْعُظْمى، لامِثْلُها نازِلَةٌ، وَ لا بائِقَةٌ عاجِلَةٌ اُعْلِنَ بِها، كِتابُ اللَّهِ جَلَّ ثَناوهُ فی اَفْنِیَتِكُمْ، وَ فی مُمْساكُمْ وَ مُصْبِحِكُمْ، یَهْتِفُ فی اَفْنِیَتِكُمْ هُتافاً وَ صُراخاً وَ تِلاوَةً وَ اَلْحاناً، وَ لَقَبْلَهُ ما حَلَّ بِاَنْبِیاءِ اللَّهِ وَ رُسُلِهِ، حُكْمٌ فَصْلٌ وَ قَضاءٌ حَتْمٌ

« وَ ما مُحَمَّدٌ اِلاَّ رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ اَفَاِنْ ماتَ اَوْ قُتِلَ انْقَلَبْتُمْ عَلى اَعْقابِكُمْ وَ مَنْ یَنْقَلِبْ عَلى عَقِبَیْهِ فَلَنْ یَضُرَّ اللَّهَ شَیْئاً وَ سَیَجْزِى اللَّهُ شَیْئاً وَ سَیَجْزِى اللَّهُ الشَّاكِرینَ ».

قاتَلْتُمُ الْعَرَبَ، وَ تَحَمَّلْتُمُ الْكَدَّ وَ التَّعَبَ، وَ ناطَحْتُمُ الْاُمَمَ، وَ كافَحْتُمُ الْبُهَمَ، لا نَبْرَحُ اَوْ تَبْرَحُونَ، نَأْمُرُكُمْ فَتَأْتَمِرُونَ، حَتَّى اِذا دارَتْ بِنا رَحَى الْاِسْلامِ، وَ دَرَّ حَلَبُ الْاَیَّامِ، وَ خَضَعَتْ نُعْرَةُ الشِّرْكِ، وَ سَكَنَتْ فَوْرَةُ الْاِفْكِ، وَ خَمَدَتْ نیرانُ الْكُفْرِ، وَ هَدَأَتْ دَعْوَةُ الْهَرَجِ، وَ اسْتَوْسَقَ نِظامُ الدّینِ، فَاَنَّى حِزْتُمْ بَعْدَ الْبَیانِ، وَاَسْرَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ الْاِعْلانِ، وَ نَكَصْتُمْ بَعْدَ الْاِقْدامِ، وَاَشْرَكْتُمْ بَعْدَ الْایمانِ؟

بُوساً لِقَوْمٍ نَكَثُوا اَیْمانَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ، وَ هَمُّوا بِاِخْراجِ الرَّسُولِ وَ هُمْ بَدَوكُمْ اَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ، اَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ فَاللَّهُ اَحَقُّ اَنْ تَخْشَوْهُ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُومِنینَ

اَلا، وَ قَدْ أَرى اَنْ قَدْ اَخْلَدْتُمْ اِلَى الْخَفْضِ، وَ اَبْعَدْتُمْ مَنْ هُوَ اَحَقُّ بِالْبَسْطِ وَ الْقَبْضِ، وَ خَلَوْتُمْ بِالدَّعَةِ، وَ نَجَوْتُمْ بِالضّیقِ مِنَ السَّعَةِ، فَمَجَجْتُمْ ما وَعَبْتُمْ، وَ دَسَعْتُمُ الَّذى تَسَوَّغْتُمْ، فَاِنْ تَكْفُرُوا اَنْتُمْ وَ مَنْ فِی الْاَرْضِ جَمیعاً فَاِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِیٌّ حَمیدٌ

اَلا، وَ قَدْ قُلْتُ ما قُلْتُ هذا عَلى مَعْرِفَةٍ مِنّی بِالْخِذْلَةِ الَّتی خامَرْتُكُمْ، وَ الْغَدْرَةِ الَّتِی اسْتَشْعَرَتْها قُلُوبُكُمْ، وَ لكِنَّها فَیْضَةُ النَّفْسِ، وَ نَفْثَةُ الْغَیْظِ، وَ حَوَزُ الْقَناةِ، وَ بَثَّةُ الصَّدْرِ، وَ تَقْدِمَةُ الْحُجَّةِ، فَدُونَكُمُوها فَاحْتَقِبُوها دَبِرَةَ الظَّهْرِ، نَقِبَةَ الْخُفِّ، باقِیَةَ الْعارِ، مَوْسُومَةً بِغَضَبِ الْجَبَّارِ وَ شَنارِ الْاَبَدِ، مَوْصُولَةً بِنارِ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةِ الَّتی تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْاَفْئِدَةِ

فَبِعَیْنِ اللَّهِ ما تَفْعَلُونَ، وَ سَیَعْلَمُ الَّذینَ ظَلَمُوا اَىَّ مُنْقَلَبٍ یَنْقَلِبُونَ، وَ اَنَا اِبْنَةُ نَذیرٍ لَكُمْ بَیْنَ یَدَىْ عَذابٌ شَدیدٌ، فَاعْمَلُوا اِنَّا عامِلُونَ، وَ انْتَظِرُوا اِنَّا مُنْتَظِرُونَ

English Rendering

Then the Lady of Islam (a.s) spoke to the group of Ansars going on with her speech in an expressive, firm and pounding tone, saying thus; “O’ Gentlemen, and O’ mighty upper arms of the nation and friends of Islam! What is this connivance of yours against my indisputable right? And what is this negligence you exhibit in response to the injustice that has been done to me? Didn’t my father the Prophet of Islam say:

“A person’s respect must be kept in regard to his children.”

How quickly you changed the conditions and how swiftly you took steps towards the deviated path, while you have the ability to administer my justice, and you have sufficient power for that which I say:

Are you saying: Mohammad has left the world - and with his death everything has come to an end, and his household must be forgotten and his Sunnah trampled?

Yes, his death was a painful blow and a tragedy for the Islamic world. It is a grave disaster that brought down the dust of sorrow on everyone, and every day the fissure becomes clearer and its break more extensive and its amplitude increased. The earth darkens because of his absence, and the stars lack brilliance because of the disaster; hopes turned into despair. Mountains became unstable; the honor of persons was trampled, and with his death no respect remains. I swear to God, this is an immense event and a great tragedy and an irreparable loss. But don’t forget it the Prophet left, the magnificent Quran had previously reported of it; the very Quran which is continually present in your homes, morning and night, loudly and exclaiming or quietly and read to us with various tones. The prophets previous to him were also confronted with this reality, because death is Godly command with infringements being unacceptable.

Yes, the Quran had said explicitly:

“And Mohammad is no more than an apostle: the apostles have already passed away before him; if then he dies or is killed, will you turn back upon your heels? And whoever turns back upon his heels, he will by no means does harm to Allah in the least; and Allah will reward the grateful.” (3:143)

Strange! O’ children of Qila1 must my inheritance be trampled while you see and hear clearly, and the reality is spoken of in your meetings and gatherings, and its news reaches you easily and you still sit in silence?

Even though you have ample personnel and extensive power, equipment, weapons and armor, you hear my call and do not answer?! My shout is arousing suspicion among you and you don’t react to it? This is when you are the idiom of courage, and are known for your charity and goodness, and you are the elect of the tribes and sects.

You battled the Arab infidels, and bore the sufferings and hardships. You routed the stubborn and you fought with great warriors. And it was you who were constantly moving along with us, and were in our line you submitted to our commands and were ready for our orders.

This until the mill of Islam began rotating on the axis of our families’ existence, and milk began flowing in the breasts of mother time. The clamors of polytheism were stifled in throats and the flames of falsehood died down, the fire of infidelity was extinguished, and the call to diversion was halted, while the discipline of religion was affirmed.

Then why after all of those explanations from the Quran and the Holy Prophet of Islam have you remained perplexed today? Why do you keep the realities hidden after they have been clarified to you? And why have you broken your pacts, and after faith you have taken the road of polytheism?

“What! Will you not fight a people, who broke their oaths and aimed at the expulsion of the apostle, and they attacked you first; do you fear them? But Allah is most deserving that you fear Him, if you are believers.” (9:13)

Be aware, I see it thus that you have turned to comfort and have become Pleasure-Seekers. You have abandoned the one person more worthy than all for the leadership and administration of the Muslims’ affairs. You have leaned in a quiet corner in ease and self-cherishing, turning to the expanse of indifference from the pressures of the narrow pass of responsibilities.

Yes, what you had in you of faith and awareness you have thrown out, and you have with difficulty regulated the putrid water you had drank.

But don’t forget, God says:

“If you are ungrateful, you and those on earth all together, most surely Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praised.” (14:8)

Know and be aware that I have said what I must say, while I know well that the forsaking of right (Haqq) is mixed with your flesh, and breach of promise has fallen over your heart. But since my heart was heavy with sorrow - and I felt a strong sense of responsibility, some of my inner griefs poured out, and the sorrow that swelled within my breast came out (so I could complete my ultimatum to you and let there be no excuse left for anyone).

Now that it is so, this steed of the Caliphate, and that Fadak, all are yours. Hold on tightly and don’t let go. But know that this is not a steed with which you may proceed in your own way; its back is wounded and its hoofs are split! The brand of disgrace is upon it and the wrath of God is its sign. Eternal disgrace is accompanied by it and in the end it will join the blazing fires of God’s indignation.

Don’t forget that what you do is in God’s presence.

“They who act unjustly shall know to what final place of turning they will turn back…” (26:227)

“And say to those who do not believe: Who gave you a prognosis in the face of severe torment? Do what you are able to do.”

“And say to those who do not believe: Act according to your state, surely we too are acting. And wait surely we are waiting also.” (11:121-122)

Interpretation

1. The effective role of the Ansars in the advance of Islamic objectives

The lady of Islam (a.s) in this section of her speech describes the ‘Ansars’ clan as an elect group, the powerful forearm of Islam and devoted friend of the Prophet of Islam. She then expresses her gratefulness for their efforts at the beginning of the Prophet’s entrance to Medina, and even before that in the way of Islam.

Yes, really, the Ansars played a very effective part in the promotion of Islam, during war and peace, in the beginning and in the end, in all the stages and with all of what they requested less than the Mohajereen.

If things would have fallen into their hands maybe the history of Islam would have traversed a more enlightened course. Of course, among the Mohajereen there were some devoted persons who never neglected any self-sacrifice or generosity. However, with all of that influence, the political players among them completely changed the situation.

2. Fatimah places them under the shower of her censures

The Lady of Islam’s surprise is here:

Why have these powerful forearms and old friends of the Prophet (S) placed the seal of silence on their lips in the face of this injustice that they allowed in relation to their family? With their silence they gave their endorsement of these cruelties and did not keep the Prophet’s respect as regards his family. Most important of all, in that face of the change in the axis of the caliphate, after a short confrontation and that in their own favor: They sympathized, cooperated and condoled, in exchange for the right to silence that they received. This was an unforgivable error!

3. With the death of the Prophet (S) Islam does not die

The great Qur’an on the one hand, and the Prophet himself on the other, reported the fact that the Islamic religion is not upright because of a person. It is a religion, eternal until the very last day, and does not cease with the death of the prophet. This is because it was a revolution based on a school (of thought), a heavenly and Godly school, a school harmonious with human needs throughout history, and such a school must remain.

But despite all this, a short-sighted imperceptive group imagined that with the painful blow and heart-rendering tragedy that was done to the Islamic world at the death of the prophet of Islam, and with the vacuum that appeared from the absence of this great leader in the perimeters of Islam; the exordium of Islam had been read, and its scroll had been rolled up! And for this very reason they remained silent before the clamors of paganism.

Fatimah (s.a.) shouts, and reminds them of the Quranic verses that speak of the permanence and eternity of Islam! She awakens the negligent from careless sleep and introduces the Muslims to their heavy responsibilities in that extremely sensitive time.

4. Why do you sit silently in the face of the violation of Islamic commandments?

In another high point of her speech she intensely reproaches the Ansar saying; “Your silence in the Fadak incident, an incident that is a link from a series of chain-like deviations, and a spark from an extant flame and a drop from one vast current will end in the revival of the Anti-Islamic specter.” The people say: “if it is really true that Islamic law is just, why isn’t it enforced in the case of the closest relatives of the Prophet?” “In a place where they violate such an indisputable right and you endorse it with your silence, the violation of the rest of the Islamic laws will not be difficult.”

“You should think of this affair as a current not as a localized, one-sided incident, and calculate which other incidents are hidden behind this incident? My agitation and clamor is for this very reason! Don’t think that your rising for the aid of one who is oppressed like me will create a split in the Islamic community. But rather on the contrary, your silence puts everything under question. If you say that you don’t have the power it is a lie. Abundant resources were made available to you from the beginning and now they are more plentiful. Despite this, why do you discard the explicit Quranic verse which says, “Rise to battle the violators of an oath.” And instead of fearing God you fear them.”

5. The prevalence of the spirit of “welfare-seeking”

This great teacher, in another high point reaches into the depths of their souls and pulls out the primary reason for this silence, saying, “The matter is that the spirit of welfare-seeking has prevailed over you, you have given yourself to the desire for tranquility. And even though you see with your own eyes that they have put aside the one person who is more worthy than anyone for the caliphate, you remain silent?

Yes, a true revolution is a forerunner as long as its individuals keep their revolutionary spirit, and the inclinations for welfare-seeking don’t prevail over them. If not they will submit in the face of difficulties, and they pass by indifferently all bitter responsibility, creating incidents, and the revolution is extinguished.”

6. With this spirit I know you are unable to do anything!

This courageous lady with her deep perception tells of future events. And in another high point in this section she speaks to the ‘Ansar’ saying; my aim is to deliver my ultimatum, and other than that I have no hope in you. Where you have remained silent in the same way in regard to ‘Fadak’. But my words today will be recorded in the history of Islam and future comers will judge. In addition to this I also wanted to open the knots in my heart and pour out the blood in my breast so that everyone would know of my tormenting pain!

7. Be ready for painful events

The heroine of Islam also notifies them, “Don’t think that this silence and desire for your own welfare, becoming bystanders and indifferent, will end cheaply for you. You will taste its bitter fruit in this world in the form of tyrannical governments - such as Bani Umayeh and Bani Abbas - who have no mercy on your future generations, and are not for Islam and the Quran.

“In addition, in Gods’ great court on resurrection day, you will have to pay its atonement.”

8. He gave a prognosis and I also given a prognosis!

Fatimah, the broken-hearted lady and the eminently-positioned daughter of the prophet, in the last part of her speech speaks the same words that the divine prophets said against mutinous groups. She gives them a prognosis, saying;

“You should be waiting, we are also waiting.”

You are waiting for greater pressures to be brought upon the family of the Prophet (S); we are also awaiting God’s punishment for you!
