Imam Jawad’s (A.S.)seventeen years of Imamate coincided with the reigns of Ma’mun and Mu’tasim Abbasi, two of Abbasid Caliphs: 15 years in the reign of Ma’mun(1) and two years in the reign of Mu’tasim. During this period the Imam experienced great hardship in preaching Shiism. Ma’mun’s reign was especially hard on the Imam for as Ibn Nadim has said: “Ma’mun was the most knowledgeable of the caliphs in jurisprudence and theology.” Imam Jawad’s (A.S.)first fifteen years were similar to that of his father in that he was forced to deal with the most knowledgeable and deceitful Abbasid Caliph.

The abundance of Imam al-Jawad’s knowledge and sciences was astonishing and he was indeed the great miracle of Islam. He was skillful in different sciences and arts since he was too young. Scholars, jurisprudents, philosophers and theologians asked him about the deepest and most precise questions and he answered them all. They were astonished and confused for that and some of them believed in his imamate. Following the martyrdom of Imam Reza (A.S.) eighty men of wisdom traveled to perform Hajj. On the way (to Mecca) they arrived Madina and went to Imam's (A.S.) house to pay him a visit. Imam (A.S.) who was a young age (child) move into the aggregation and all of them stood up to honor and respect him.
