Shia Muslims Cultural and Educational Institutions
United Muslim Women of Canada
A great need to unite the Muslim sisters, led to the formation of the United Muslim Women of Canada, in October of 1995. The UMWC, a subsidiary of the Islamic Humanitarian Service, is comprised of active and dedicated sisters - serving in various chapters that have been established throughout Canada.
Prior to the establishing of the UMWC, sisters were somewhat confined to the 'Ladies' Committees' of the local Jamaats or Institutions. These Jamaats, and therefore the women therein, lacked the opportunity to become actively involved in the mainstream societal matters. There was no mandate to speak up against tyranny or injustice, nor to promote solidarity among the female adherents to the noble Ahlul Bait (AS) nationally or internationally, the UMWC was established. The Sisters setting up the UMWC, envisaged a body that would be dynamic in nature which would appeal to other sisters all over Canada.
Whenever an issue affecting women surfaces, the UMWC prepares an appropriate response, in light of the teachings of the daughter of the Prophet of Islam, Fatimah az-Zahra (AS), the perfect example for all women..
The void of sisters nationwide would resound much louder, than on an individual level from here and there. Therefore, the UMWC has teen working closely, and shall continue to do so with the 'Ladies'
Committees' and 'Muslim Organizations' in each area, and shall coordinate all activities to ensure that there is no duplication or wastage of efforts.
Muslim Youth Association (MYA)
The Islamic Humanitarian Service based in Kitchener, Ontario, has strived to serve Allah (SWT) and human beings in the name of Islam for over a decade. In continuation of its legacy of serving Muslims in the West, the Islamic Humanitarian Service initiated the position of the National Youth Coordinator (NYC) in February 2000. The NYC office has established a national youth network by the name of the Muslim Youth Association (MYA). The goals of the association are: to promote unity amongst Muslims, to engage youths in the propagation of Islam, and to promote youth involvement in Islamic initiatives.
The MYA will consist of various sub-groups overlooking issues such as Media, Peer Mentorship, Discussions/debates, Reverts to Islam, Current Events, Marriage Counseling, Literature Review, Career Counseling, Disaster Relief, Graduate Registry etc. MYA is not limited by geographical or cultural boundaries and thus it is an organization that welcomes all Muslim youths, regardless of background.
Muslims have settled in the West for a number of decades, and it now time to plan for sustainability of the future generations of Muslims. Thus, in light of the above tradition of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him and his family), the office of the MYA will, Insha-Allah embark upon numerous projects geared towards the spiritual and intellectual development of the youths and young generation. The MYA website will feature Book Reviews, News Bulletins, Events, Contests, Awards, the Fortnightly Gift, and numerous other online resources.
At this point the MYA is in its infancy stages and thus we require your input and support. Volunteers with different expertise are required across the country. Also, MYA is accepting nominations for MYA Representatives in different cities. If you think you have the leadership skills and dedication it takes to make a different in your local or regional community, please get in touch with us via email: Muslim Youth Associationzkarim@muslimyouth.ca. We would love to get you involved!
The opportunities and potential for Muslims in the West are infinite. It is the responsibility of all Muslims in this part of the world to become active in the propagation of Islam. We hope that the Muslim Youth Association can trigger this propagation and facilitate the establishment of a comprehensive network progressive Muslims in Canada and the Western world.
The Islamic Humanitarian Service has ignited something very special, and it is for us, the future of the Muslim Community, to take the torch and kindle the passion of Islam in the hearts of humanity in preparation for the coming messiah, Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his return).

Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association
Founded in 1997, the Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association has since become a flourishing and vibrant community of approximately 200 muslims. Its membership comprises of a richly diverse yet close knit group of people from various parts of the world including India, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Philippines, Tanzania, Kenya, Qatar, and the United States.
Prior to the establishment of the Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association, the shia muslim community in Austin gathered for majalis in each others residences. With an increasingly large community, the need for an organized structure led to the creation of the Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association in the holy month of Ramadhan, 1417 (1997). The Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association was formally registered with the State of Texas as a non-profit organization on February 20, 1997.
With the grace of the Almighty, this association has grown in number and greatly succeeded in it's efforts to involve the members in various community activities. From the weekly majalis and the Al-Mohammedi Madressa, it has expanded to include a wide array of activities such as community services, an audio, video, and book library, a web page, an e-mail mailing list, annual picnics, and sporting events such as volleyball, paintball and table-tennis.
This has not been the endeavor of a single individual. It took a community to build another. The members have come together in unity, bringing with them rich cultural diversity to facilitate inter-cultural exchanges and promote understanding. This collective effort has paid off, the results of which are apparent during gatherings and events. The IABA has certainly become an exemplary uniting force, a force united under the banner of the Almighty Allah, the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him and His Progeny), and the Holy Ahlul Bayt.

Shi'i Ithnasheri Community of Middlesex (SICM)
The organisation is known as Shi'i Ithnasheri Community of Middlesex (SICM) and its centre in North Harrow is known as Mehfil-e-Ali. SICM also has a registered charity operating under the name of Battlers Well Foundation (BWF).
Background
The origins of SICM can be traced to the arrival in the UK of a number of students from East Africa in the mid sixties. Soon, These students got aquainted with other Shi'i students from Pakistan, India, Iran, Iraq and Gulf countries.
There was already a resident Pakistani community and the students participated enthusiastically in organisations like the Idara-e-Ja'aferiyya. In the universities and colleges the Shi'i students formed an organisation called the Muslim Youth Association (MYA).
These activities resulted in the formation of close bonds between Shi'i students and communities from all over the world. The small community of Khoja Shi'is from East Africa had an organisation called the East African Union, but for religious functions particiapted with the Muslim Youth Association or theIdara-e-Ja'aferiyya.
With the events in East Africa forcing many families to leave their countries and settle in the UK, the early seventies saw a large influx of people into the UK. Many of the East African Muslim students also stayed on in the UK on a more or less permanent basis.
As the needs for holding religious and other community functions became more regular and the community became larger, the requirement for "permanent" places became urgent. SICM was one of the many organisations which was established to meet this growing need.
The Founding of SICM
With a sizeable settled community in Middlesex, there emerged the practice of having regular Iftar in Ramadhan, initially in individual houses and later in hired halls in the vicinity of Harrow. There were already over 100 Shi'i Muslim families living within 2/3 miles of the centre of Harrow and the gatherings were well attended.
Gradually, the activities evolved and an organisation called the Shi'i Ithnasheri Community of Middlesex (SICM) was formed to provide an institutional framework for arranging the meetings and gatnerings. In addition to Ramadhan, gatherings began to be held on every Friday evening and on the occasion of the birth or death anniversry of the a'aimmas. Local community/assembly halls were hired for this purpose.
For the last twenty years on every Friday evening SICM has had a meeting in which a wide variety of issues relating to Islam and the Muslim World have been discussed. Learned and competent people from all walks of life have contributed to the discussions on many occassions.
SICM, after a long process of lobbying of the local authority was able to secure the rental of the West Harrow school premises on a 12 monthly basis. With the rental of premises, the activities increased manifold. In addition to regular Friday functions, SICM started daily Qur'an classes for young children, daily evening congregational prayer (salaat), morning salaat on weekends, regular sports sessions and many other specialised meetings and seminars. There was a major seminar on the Nahj al Balagah and one on the Concept of Vilayat-e-Faqih. Mohurrum majalis were also held for the first time.
As the rental of the West Harrow school came up for renewal SICM was fortunate enough to persuade the Harrow borough to let the North Harrow Assembly Hall (NHAH) to the organisation. The NHAH was by then under the threat of closure because of cuts in local authority budgets. As expected within a year the Hall came up for sale. SICM, with the help of its Councillors, well wishers, and supporting bankers was able to acquire the Hall as its permanent worship, meeting and gathering place.
Inside North Harrow Assembly Hall
With the purchase of the premises, the activities of SICM have become much more consistent. Presently the following are regularly held:
• Friday programme, many times with prominent guests
• Occasional seminars and other programmes
• Iftar, Childrens' programme and Qur'an reading daily in Ramadhan
• Dua-e-Qumayl on Thursday evenings
• Majalis in English in Mohurrum and on birth and death anniversaries of Ma'asumin
• Weekly sports club at a local leisure centre
• Sports session for children on weekends
• Eid Prayers
• Gatherings by other Muslim organisations
In addition, SICM through the Battlers Well Foundation (BWF) has also secured a vital facility. A dedicated graveyard with over three hundred burial spaces has been secured at the Woodcock Hill Cemetry in Harefield. Already the cemetry houses about a 100 graves and efforts are in process to increase the land bank.
The BWF had also made plans to establish a Muslim school in Harefield and a 34 acre plot of land was secured at the Battlers Well Farm in Northwood. However, the more accomodating environment for Muslims in schools in the UK has led to the abandonment of the project for the foreseeable future.
Future Plans
The SICM centre is now well established. The main hall has recently been extensively refurbished and plans are in process to complete the refurbishment of the whole site during the course of 1998, inshallah. It is intended to incorporate the following activities:
• Library and information centre for Muslims and those seeking sources on Islam
• Internet access provision for the community
• Gusalkhana for the community
• Educational coaching classes
• Develop linkages with other Muslim communities and organisations
• Quaterly seminars on issues of relevance to the Muslim World
Throughout its 25 years of activity SICM has remained true to its objectives of bringing a diverse group of Shi'is together and also develop mutually re-inforcing and respectful relations with the Muslim community at large. This will continue to be its mission as it develops its activities further and becomes a focal point for Muslims in the North West of London.

"ZAINABIA ISLAMIC EDUCATION CENTER."
In April 1997, the Muslim Community of Northeast Atlanta, launched an ambitious project to start a program towards fulfilling community needs. An organization was established as Zainabia Non-profit Inc, through which a property was purchased as "ZAINABIA ISLAMIC EDUCATION CENTER." This center is where Muslims can practice and propagate the teachings of our Prophets and his Ahlul-Bai't to the upcoming generation. This center will serve as a focal point for the Northeast Atlanta's Muslim community, and provide all the adults and children a sense of belonging.
For the last 25 years, there has been a steady growth of the Muslim Community(Jaffri Fiqah) in the Northeast Atlanta area. There was no permanent place available for the the religious activities and the Islamic education of the children. For the most part, all programs were held at homes or rented halls. The initiative of a few individuals in the community made it possible to acquire a facility to meet these necessary needs of the community. Today(2001) Zainabia Islamic Education Center has its doors open for all muslims and non-muslims to learn ISLAM and it's value. Zainabia has events in Arabic, English, Persian, and Urdu to involve muslims from different communities. The goal is to educate muslims and non-muslims alike on the attributes of Islam, taking a special interest in cultivating muslim youth in America.

World Islamic Propagation and Humanitarian Services (WIPAHS)
WIPAHS is an organization based in the capital city of Tanzania - Dar es salaam.
It is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). WIPAHS started its activities from nothing in 1985/1986. It is now about 16 years old.
WIPAHS OBJECTIVES
1. Propagation of the true teachings of Islam as revealed to the Holy Prophet (SAW) and detailed by the Ahlul-Bayt (AS)
2. Upliftment of the conditions of Muslims and other poor citizens of the country by providing water, education, medical care, etc. at normal or subsidized rates.
3. Encourage, and help in poverty alleviation plans by the local communities.
4. Cooperation with other institutions, charitable, religious or otherwise with similar objectives and aims.
5. WIPAHS strongly believes in maintaining cordial and friendly relationship with sisterly organizations and strongly distances itself from confrontations that can weaken the organization and hinder implementation of their objectives. Neither is WIPAHS objective to interfere in other organizations’ affairs or duplicate work already being done. WIPAHS has rather filled in a vacant niche in offering its services in forgotten or neglected fields, like female education, etc.
The foremost duty is to be aware of the condition of the other Muslims and exploring ways of helping them. One can help others in many ways, those who have money can help financially, those who have abilities or know how.
It is obligatory on us to help all Muslims who need help, physically as well as spiritually.

Islamic studies are taught according to the Qur’an and the Hadith and Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW)), as relayed to us by and under the Guidance of the Holy Imams (AS) the Household of the Prophet (SAW).
The College is in Kibaha at “Maili Moja” area just about 30 kilometers from the City Center and is built on spacious 70 acres on hillside plot. There are 24 classrooms, two computer rooms, a library, one lecture theater, Sajadiya Prayer Hall, Dinner Hall with a modern kitchen, two wings of five story dormitories with 30 rooms each (capacity 360 students) teachers quarters and workshops. Currently (February 2002), there are 360 students on campus.
The basic philosophy is to provide secular education as well as to give strong religious, moral and spiritual foundation so that they may become practicing Muslims and better mothers of tomorrow. These literate mothers will be in a better position to break the cycle of poverty-illiteracy and provide stable homes for their offspring.

Future Plans
Immediate: Consolidate current courses and introduce other marketable Diploma Courses.
Long Term: Prepare transition plant so that in 4 to 5 years will be able to offer Bachelors Degree in relevant fields.
1. Secondary School: Permission to start secondary schools was given by the Ministry of Education on condition that at a later date the Secondary School will be housed in separate buildings apart from the college building currently in use. Nevertheless, the current building is also running out of space for extra classes required by the secondary department. Classes can only be accommodated till the end of the year 2002.
2. Boarding House: The current dorms are running out of space, as it can accommodate at present not more than 340 students. The intention is to build other dorms with the Secondary School.
3. Primary School: There is also demand for a Primary School so that students from the Nursery School can continue with the quality education that they have been receiving so far. Depending on the number of application received, the Primary School may start in January 2002 within the current Nursery School premises. If successful, then a separate block will have to be built and be ready by January, 2003.
4. Administration Building: Currently the Administration Offices including staff rooms are located within the classroom block. Since we are running out of classrooms, it is proposed to build an Administration Block properly designed to handle smooth administration, record keeping, staff rooms, conference room, etc.
5. Library & Research Center: Currently two classrooms are used as a library, which is already too small and congested with hardly enough space for reading for all 300 students. The books section is also too small. It is proposed to build a custom designed computerized library and research center, capable of holding up to 800 students for study time.
6. MEDEWELL: Institute of Ophthalmology: It will start as Eye Clinic and then expand services by offering more services. It will also act as a center for training medical workers starting with Diploma and Certificate in Optometry and Eye nursing and later degree in Ophthalmology. A detailed write-up is available on request.
7. Mosque: With the increasing number of students the prayer hall is becoming smaller in spite of expanding it twice previously. The Master Plan requires the construction of a proposed Mosque capable of accommodating at least 1,000 students.
WIPAHS Management with encouragement from donors as well as the success of the MEDEWELL Eye Project, decided to embark on this project.
This is a very ambitious project and according to the Project proposal prepared by Dr. Dhalla, will take about 10 years to complete.
The aim of this Project is to offer excellent eye services at the most reasonable and affordable cost, and at the same time to establish a Center of Academic Excellence in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Paramedics.
The fist phase will involve the construction of an out-patient section and provision of basic eye services, leading to the construction of an Operation Theater. The second phase will involve provision of advanced eye services like anterior segment and cornea surgery, virtue retinal surgeries, refractive and VR surgeries. The aim is to equip the Center with all kinds of diagnostic and treatment equipment, like lasers, phaco-emulsion, etc.
At the same time as the services expand, we intend to use the facility in cooperation with the Wali-ul-Asr Education Center to train medical workers in various fields like, Optometrist, Assistant Medical Officers Ophthalmology/Cataract, Ophthalmic Nursing Officers and Assistants and later Ophthalmologist.
The Foundation Stone of the first phase was laid on November 2, 2001 and the construction has already started. It is expected that early out-patient services be ready by June, 2002.
When fully operational, there may be no need for patients to travel to Nairobi or India or United Kingdom for an eye-treatment. Let us pray to the Almighty Allah to accept our efforts and to help us to succeed - Inshallah.
Du’a (Prayers) of the Holy Month of Ramadan: It is also the month of reflection, the month of spiritual purification and purification of our wealth, it the month to sit down and think about where we are coming from, and where we are going to. It is a month to think of others and to thank Almighty Allah for the innumerable blessing He has given us.
It is well-known that you realize the benefit of an item only when you start missing it. You also realize the benefit of saliva only when your mouth runs dry.
During this month it is obligatory upon us (Muslims) to look around us and at those who are less fortunate, both financially as well as physically, and think about ways to help them and ease their difficulties even if that be only for a moment. It is at that very moment that you may see a smile that you may never forget in your life!
WIPAHS with generous help from the community here, and abroad has several projects during this holy month of Ramadan. Here below we give some in brief:
a) Food Packet Distribution consisting of rice, maize-flour, sugar, salt and cow-peas and cooking oil. This takes place in various Muslim centers, e.g., mosques and madressas in Dar-es-Salaam, Kibaha, Dodoma, Morogoro, Mwanza, Zanzibar and Pemba. It is expected that about 3,000 people will benefit from this Food Packet Distribution.
b) Break-fast (Iftar) meals supplied to various centers especially the disabled, blind school, and deaf-dumb schools. A group of girls visit, distribute and share Iftar with them for the whole month of Ramadan.
c) Visits to hospitals for food distribution as well as other relief assistance.
d) Cash assistance to the poor and the needy families in Dar-es-Salaam as well as in other towns like Dodoma and Zanzibar.
e) Distribution of Qur’an to madressas and mosques.
f) Special Program for the Last Friday of Ramadan. A grand program for ladies with lectures on various important topics, followed by Iftar. The number of participants last year was 1,500.
g) Islamic Crash Course for Muslim Girls at Kibaha. Sixty new students joined other 300 students in Kibaha at Wali-ul-Asr Education Center for intensive courses in Islam.
