Arabia is a land of unparalleled charm and beauty, with its trackless deserts of sand dunes and mirages in the dazzling rays of a tropical sun. Its starry sky has excited the imagination of poets, travelers and mystics. It was in this land, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), on whom be peace, was born in the city of Mecca, which is about fifty miles from the Red Sea. The Prophet came to the world to the burden that humanity was carrying. “And he removed from them their burden and the yokes which were upon them.” [1] What heavy burdens were the people of that age carrying! These burdens were breaking humanity’s back. Today, nothing has changed. One would not be exaggerating if he would say that the burdens that humanity carries today are heavier than the burdens that were carried during the Age of Ignorance in the Arabian Peninsula.

Being a relative of Muhammad ('s) only means that your responsibility is greater. That is why it is reported that when someone saw Ali bin Al-Hussain ('a) crying in prayer despite the fact that his grandfather was the Messenger ('s) and Imam Ali ('a), while his grandmother was Fatima ('a) and Al-Hussain ('a) was his father, he told him that Allah created heaven for those who obey him even if they were slaves and he created hell for those who disobey him even if they were from the nobility of Quraish (the most noble Arabian tribe).

The claim of Dr Sayyid `Abd al-Latif (who observes that the source of belief in an "unschooled" Prophet (SA) has been in the interpretation of the word "ummi"), is unfounded. This is because, firstly, the history of the Arabs and the Makkah at the advent of Islam, is decisive evidence of the fact that the Prophet (SA) was untaught.

For a long time, the Jews were masters of Medina. The tribes of Aws and Khazraj (the Ansar) had settled there later. Gradually, these tribes gathered strength and equaled the Jews in power and prestige. The internecine war of the Bu’ath, however, weakened them, and the Jews again assumed ascendancy. The Jews were a prosperous people and money lending at exorbitant rates of interest was one of their main occupations. With the deterioration in the economic situation of the tribes of Aws and Khazraj, many of them became heavily in debt to the Jews.
