In the summer of 2011 I told my parents that I was going to Karbala, whether it be with a friend, with a group, or on my own. They told me I wouldn’t and that I couldn’t go for fear of my safety. I disregarded this, I was determined to go. After trying everything, I thought I would end up going on my own, until I was referred to a group by a friend of mine. A group of Khojas, which turned out to be the friendliest group of people I had encountered in my whole life.

Something that stayed in my mind throughout the trip was a statement made by Sheikh Panju. He said that those who die in the way of Allah SWT, the martyrs, are not dead in the way we perceive one to be normally dead. In this case these are our Imams.

A highlight for me whilst in Najaf was visiting Ayatollah Sistani in his house. The house he has not left in 5 years due to those who want him dead, and even though he lives 4 minutes away from where Imam Ali (as) is buried, he cannot visit him. As for Karbala.. What can I say? Nothing can do this experience justice. On the day we departed to Karbala, we got off the coach a few hours walk before the harams of Abul Fadel’s (as) and Imam Hussain’s (as) shrines. We took off our shoes, in tribute to Sayeda Zainab, and began our walk, barefoot.

Initially we are introducing the more famous books as there is a possibility that some of our brothers may not be in touch with these invaluable works. Did Allah Leave Imam al-Husayn (as) Unaided?
One of the questions which is often asked about the event of Karbala and Imam al-Husayn (as) is why Allah did not help Imam al-Husayn (as) ? Allah is capable of doing whatever He wishes. They believe that the Imams are able to foresee and know exactly what is going to happen in the future. Skeptics dispute that if this Shi‘ah assertion is true, then how can they justify Imam al-Husayn’s (as) uprising against Yazid, the son of Mu‘awiyah, when he knew very well that he was going to be martyred in the end? If Imam al-Husayn (as) had prior knowledge about his death, then why did he undertake the uprising?

Muslim ibn 'Aqil had taken two of his sons to Kufah with him. The older son was called Muhammad and the younger Ibrahim. Both of them were under the age of ten years. When Muslim ibn 'Aqil realized how dangerous a threat Ibn Ziyad was, he called for Qadi Shurayh and handed over his two sons to him. Qadi Shurayh kept the two boys in his house until the martyrdom of Muslim ibn 'Aqil.
