Some reckon that the matter of designation has not been mentioned in Nahj al-Balaghah at all and what is referred to is only the matter of competency and worthiness. Such reckoning is incorrect because first of all, just as it was mentioned in the previous chapter, in Sermon No.2, ‘Ali (A.S.) very explicitly says about Ahl al-Bayt: وَ فِيهم الوَصِيَّةُ وَ الْوِراثَةُ i.e. the testament and the inheritance of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.A) are concerning them.

Officially, Abu Bakr is the best of this Ummah, after its Prophet, sallallahu ‘alaihi wa alihi, according to the Ahl al-Sunnah. ‘Allamah al-Albani (d. 1420 H) for instance submits:
قلت: وكون أبي بكر رضي الله عنه أحب الناس إليه صلى الله عليه وسلم هو الموافق لكونه أفضل الخلفاء الراشدين عند أهل السنة
I say: the fact that Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, was the most beloved of mankind to him (i.e. the Prophet), peace be upon him, is consistent with the fact that he was the best of the rightly guided khalifahs in the view of the Ahl al-Sunnah.1

Land is the source of “life”. From the viewpoint of Imam Ali (a) people who possess land and water and are at the same time poverty-stricken, will be far from Divine Mercy and deprived of Allah’s favor. Imam emphasized on reviving the land and recommended the development of farming as a means of eliminating poverty from the community, and called people to engendering prosperity in the lands and exploiting them. Above all, he regarded attention to agriculture as a touchstone for evaluating the governments and their efficiency in ruler-ship, viewing agricultural development as among the main duties of administrators, and troop commanders as defenders of farmers’ rights.
