106. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : ما في اُمّتي عبدٌ ألْطَفَ أخاهُ في اللَّهِ بشي‏ءٍ مِن لُطْفٍ إلّا أخْدَمَهُ اللَّهُ مِن خَدَمِ الجنّةِ1

106. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Any person in my community who acts kindly towards his brother in faith, Allah will grant him the service of the servants of Paradise.'2

107. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : مَن أتاهُ أخوهُ المسلمُ فأكرَمَهُ فإنّما أكرَمَ اللَّهَ عزّ وجلّ3

107. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'A man who honours his believing brother when he comes to [visit] him is, by doing so, honouring Allah, Mighty and Exalted.'4

41 Fulfilling Brothers' Needs

108. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا يُكلِّفْ أحدُكُم أخاهُ الطَّلَبَ إذا عَرَفَ حاجتَهُ1

108. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Let none of you compel his brother to ask, if you already know about his need.'2

109. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : اللَّهُ في عَونِ المؤمنِ ما كانَ المؤمنُ في عَونِ أخيهِ3

109. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'Allah helps the believer as long as the believer helps his brother.'4

110. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : مَن قَضى‏ لأخيهِ المؤمنِ حاجةً قضى‏ اللَّهُ عزّوجلّ له يومَ القيامةِ مائةَ ألفِ حاجةٍ5

110. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'He who fulfils one need of his believing brother, Allah will fulfil one hundred thousand needs of his on the Day of Resurrection.'6

111. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : كَفى‏ بالمَرْءِ اعتِماداً على‏ أخيهِ أنْ يُنْزِلَ بهِ حاجتَهُ7

111. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'It suffices for a man to depend on his brother to charge him with his need.'8

42 The Etiquette of Brotherhood

112. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إذا آخى‏ أحَدُكُم رَجُلاً فَلْيَسألْهُ عَنِ اسمِهِ وَاسمِ أبيهِ وقَبيلَتِهِ ومَنزِلِهِ ؛ فَإنّهُ مِن واجِبِ الحَقِّ وصافِي الإخاءِ ، وإلّا فَهِيَ مَوَدَّةٌ حَمْقاءُ1

112. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'When one of you takes a brother, he must ask him his name, his father's name, his tribe and his address. This is part of true brotherhood, otherwise it is a foolish amity.'2

113. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : اِلْقَ أخاكَ بوجْهٍ مُنبسِطٍ3

113. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Meet your brother with a joyful face.'4

114. ب حار الأنوار عَن أنَس : كانَ رَسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله إذا فَقَدَ الرَّجُلَ مِن إخْوانِهِ ثَلاثَةَ أيّامٍ سَألَ عَنهُ ، فإنْ كانَ غائِباً دَعا لَهُ ، وإنْ كانَ شاهِداً زارَهُ ، وإنْ كانَ مَريضاً عادَهُ5

114. It is narrated in Bihar al-Anwar: When the Prophet (SAWA) missed the company of any of his brothers for three days, he would ask about him. If he was absent, he would pray for him; and if he was in town, he would visit him; and if he was ill, he would go to see him.'6

43 The Virtue of Good Manners

115. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : الأدبُ كمالُ الرَّجُلِ2

115. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Good manners are the perfection of man.'3

116. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : يا مؤمنُ ، إنّ هذا العِلْمَ والأدبَ ثَمَنُ نفسِكَ ، فاجتَهِدْ في تَعلُّمِهِما ، فما يَزيدُ مِن عِلمِكَ وأدبِكَ يَزيدُ في ثَمَنِكَ وقَدْرِكَ4

116. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'O Believer! This knowledge and good manners are the value of your soul so strive to learn them, for however much your knowledge and good manners increase, so will your value and worth accordingly.'5

117. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : الأدبُ أحْسَنُ سَجِيّةٍ6

117. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Good manners are the best disposition.'7

118. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : خيرُ ما وَرّثَ الآباءُ الأبناءَ الأدبُ8

118. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The best inheritance parents bequeath their progeny are good manners.'9

119. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : إنّ النّاسَ إلى صالحِ الأدبِ أحْوَجُ مِنهُم إلى‏ الفِضّةِ والذَّهَبِ10

119. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'People need good manners more than gold and silver.'11

120. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : حُسنُ الأدبِ أفضلُ نَسَبٍ وأشرفُ سَبَبٍ12

120. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Good manners are the best lineage and the noblest means.'13

121. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : عليكَ بالأدبِ فإنَّهُ زَيْنُ الحَسَبِ14

121. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Acquire good manners, for they are the best personal merit.'15

122. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام :حُسنُ الأدبِ يَنُوبُ عنِ الحسَبِ16

122. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Good manners may substitute for [noble] lineage.'17

123. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا حسَبَ أنفعُ مِن الأدبِ18

123. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'There is no personal merit more useful than good manners.'19

124. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : فَسَدَ حسَبُ مَن ليسَ لَه أدبٌ20

124. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Spoiled is the noble descent of a man who has no good manners.'2 1

125. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : زِينتُكُم الأدبُ22

125. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Good manners are your adornment.'23

126. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا زينةَ كالآدابِ24

126. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'There is no adornment like good manners.'25

44 Good Manners and the Mind

127. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : حُسنُ الأدبِ زِينةُ العقلِ1

127. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Good manners are the beauty of the mind.'2

128. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : كلُّ شي‏ءٍ يَحتاجُ إلى العقلِ ، والعقلُ يَحتاجُ إلَى الأدبِ3

128. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Everything needs the mind, and the mind needs good manners.'4

129. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : الأدبُ في الإنسانِ كشَجَرةٍ أصلُها العقلُ5

129. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Good manners in man resemble a tree whose root is the mind.'6

130. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن زادَ أدبُهُ على‏ عقلِهِ كانَ كالرّاعي بينَ غَنَمٍ كثيرةٍ7

130. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'He whose good manners surpass his reason is like a shepherd among numerous sheep.'8

131. ا لإمامُ الحسنُ عليه السلام : لا أدبَ لِمَن لا عَقْلَ لَهُ9

131. Imam al-Hasan (AS) said, 'A man devoid of reason cannot have good manners.'10

45 Disciplining The Self

132. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : تَولَّوْا مِن أنفسِكُم تأديبَها، واعدِلُوا بها عَن ضَراوةِ عاداتِها1

132. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Take charge of the discipline of your selves and shift them away from their rough habits.'2

133. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مُعلّمُ نفسِهِ ومُؤدّ بُها أحَقُّ بالإجْلالِ مِن معلّمِ النّاسِ ومُؤدّبِهِم3

133. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'A man who teaches his own self and disciplines it deserves more reverence than a man who teaches others and disciplines them.'4

46 - مَبادِئُ الأدَبِ‏

46 That Which Brings about Good Manners

134. ت حف العقول : قالَ اللَّهُ تعالى‏ لعيسى‏ عليه السلام : أدِّبْ قلبَكَ بالخَشْيةِ1

134. It is narrated in Tuhaf al-Uqul: Allah, most High, told Jesus2 (AS), 'Refine your heart with piety'.'3

135. ت نبيه الخواطر - لَمّا قيلَ لِعيسى‏ عليه السلام : مَن أدّبَكَ؟ - : ما أدّبَني أحَدٌ ، رأيتُ قُبْحَ الجهلِ فجانَبْتُهُ4

135. Tanbih al-Khawatir: Jesus Christ (AS) was asked, 'Who gave you good manners?' He replied, 'No one disciplined me; when I saw the ugliness of ignorance I avoided it.'5

136. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : جالِسِ العلماءَ يَزْدَدْ علمُكَ ويَحْسُنْ أدبُكَ وَتَزكُ نَفْسُكَ6

136. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Sit with scholars to increase your knowledge, to improve your manners and to purify your soul.'7

137. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : إذا زادَ عِلمُ الرّجُلِ زادَ أدبُهُ ، وتضاعَفَتْ خَشيتُه لربِّهِ8

137. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'When man's knowledge increases his manners improve and his fear of his Lord increases.'9

138. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : سبَبُ تزكيةِ الأخلاقِ حُسنُ الأدبِ1

138. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The means to purify one's moral virtues is good etiquette.'2

139. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن كَلِفَ بالأدبِ قَلَّتْ مَساوِيهِ3

139. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'A man who is preoccupied with good manners has fewer vices.'4

140. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : بالأدبِ تُشْحَذُ الفِطَنُ5

140. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The intellect is sharpened by good manners.'6

48 Explaining Good Manners

141. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : كَفاكَ أدباً لنفسِكَ اجتِنابُ ما تَكْرهُهُ مِن غيرِكَ1

141. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'It suffices you in disciplining yourself to avoid all that you hold in contempt from others.'2

142. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : كَفى‏ بالَعْبدِ أدَباً أن لا يُشرِكَ في نِعَمهِ وأرَبهِ غيرَ ربِّهِ3

142. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'It suffices man in disciplining himself to not associate anyone with his Lord in his bounties and desires.'4

143. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : أدَّبَني أبي عليه السلام بثلاثٍ قالَ لي : يا بُنيَّ مَن يَصْحَبْ صاحبَ السَّوْءِ لا يَسْلمْ ، ومَن لا يُقيِّدْ ألفاظَهُ يَنْدَمْ ، ومَن يدخُلْ مَداخِلَ السُّوءِ يُتَّهمْ5

143. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'My father (AS) refined my manners by three [statements]. He said to me: 'O son! A man who befriends a vile person cannot escape blame, and a man who does not restrain his words will live in regret, and a man who enters suspicious places will become subject to accusations.'6

49 The Best Manners

144. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : أفضلُ الأدبِ أن يَقِفَ الإنسانُ عند حَدِّه ولا يَتَعدّى‏ قَدْرَهُ1

144. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The best of manners is for man to stop at his limits and to not exceed his status.'2

145. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : أحسَنُ الآدابِ ما كَفَّكَ عنِ المَحارِمِ3

145. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The best of manners is that which prevents you from committing sins.'4

146. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : ضَبْطُ النّفْسِ عندَ الرَّغَبِ والرَّهَبِ مِن أفضلِ الأدبِ5

146. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Self-restraint in times of desire and fear is one of the best manners.'6

50 Encouraging the Teaching of Good Manners to the Family

147. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : أكرِمُوا أولادَكُم وأحْسِنوا آدابَهُم يُغْفَرْ لَكُم1

147. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Honour your children and refine their manners and your sins will be forgiven.'2

148. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام - للحسنِ عليه السلام - : إنّما قَلْبُ الحَدَثِ كالأرضِ الخالِيةِ ما اُلقِيَ فيها مِنْ شي‏ءٍ قَبِلَتْهُ ، فبادَرْتُكَ بالأدبِ قبلَ أن يَقْسُوَ قلبُكَ ويَشتغِلَ لُبّكَ3

148. Imam Ali (AS) said to Imam al-Hasan (AS), 'The heart of a youth resembles an empty land - it receives all that is thrown into it. This is why I have started to teach you good manners before your heart is hardened and your soul is preoccupied.'4

149. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : لمّا نَزَلتْ هذه الآية : (يا أيُّها الّذينَ آمَنوا قُوا أنفسَكُم وأهليكُم ناراً)5 قالَ النّاسُ : يا رسول اللَّه! كيفَ نَقِي أنفسَنا وَأهلِينا؟ قالَ : اعمَلُوا الخيرَ وذَكِّروا بهِ أهْلِيكُم فأدِّبُوهُم على‏ طاعةِ اللَّهِ6

149. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'When the verse:“O you who have faith! Protect yourselves and your kin from the Fire...” 7 was revealed, people asked, 'O Messenger of Allah! How do we protect ourselves and our kin?' He replied, 'Do good deeds and remind your kin about them, and discipline them to obey Allah.'8

150. ا لإمامُ الرِّضا عليه السلام : مُرِ الصَّبيَّ فلْيَتَصدَّقْ بيدِهِ بالكِسْرةِ والقَبْضةِ والشَّي‏ءِ وإنْ قَلَّ ، فإنَّ كلَّ شي‏ءٍ يُرادُ بهِ اللَّهُ - وإنْ قَلَّ - بعدَ أنْ تَصدُقَ النِّيّةُ فيهِ عظيمٌ9

150. Imam al-Rida (AS) said, 'Instruct the child to give charity with his own hand, be it a piece of bread or a handful of [food] or any other small thing, for everything - no matter how little it is - if done for the sake of Allah and with an honest intention is great.'10

51 How to Teach Good Manners

151. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : علِّموا أولادَكُمُ الصَّلاةَ إذا بَلَغوا سَبْعاً ، وفَرِّقوا بينَهُم في المَضاجِعِ1

151. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Teach your children to pray when they reach the age of seven....and make them sleep in separate beds.'2

152. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : الوَلدُ سَيّدٌ سبعَ سنينَ ، وعبدٌ سبعَ سنينَ ، ووزيرٌ سبعَ سنينَ، فإنْ رَضِيتَ أخلاقَهُ لإحدى‏ وعشرينَ، وإلّا فَاضْرِبْ على‏ جَنبِهِ ، فقد أعْذَرتَ إلَى اللَّهِ تعالى‏3

152. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'A child is a master for seven years, a slave for the next seven years, and a minister for another seven years. By the age of twenty one, you must either approve of his manners or cut him loose, for [by then] you would have fulfilled your obligation toward Allah, most High.'4

153. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام: يُؤدَّبُ الصَّبيُّ علَى الصَّومِ ما بينَ خَمْسَ عَشْرةَ سَنةً إلى سِتَّ عَشرةَ سنةً5

153. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'A boy should be trained to fast between the ages of fifteen and sixteen.'6

154. ب حار الأنوار : نَهَى‏ رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله عنِ الأدبِ عندَ الغَضَبِ1

154. Ali b. Asbat said, 'The Prophet (SAWA) prohibited disciplining in times of anger.'2

155. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : ازْجُرِ المُسي‏ءَ بِثوابِ المُحسِنِ3

155. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Punish the wrongdoer by rewarding the good-doer.'4

156. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : استِصْلاحُ الأخيارِ بإكْرامِهِمْ ، والأشرارِ بتأديبِهِمْ5

156. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'You may improve the doers of good by honouring them, and reform the wrongdoers by disciplining them.'6

157. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : عاتِبْ أخاكَ بالإحسانِ إليهِ ، وارْدُدْ شرَّهُ بالإنعامِ علَيهِ7

157. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Reprimand your brother by being kind to him, and react to his wrongdoing by being generous to him.'8

158. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : أصْلِحْ المُسي‏ءَ بحُسْنِ فِعالِكَ ، ودُلَّ علَى الخيرِ بِجميلِ مَقالِكَ9

158. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Rehabilitate the wrongdoer by your good deed [towards him], and indicate towards good through your good words.'10

159. ا لإمامُ الكاظمُ عليه السلام - عِندَ ما شَكى‏ لَهُ بَعضُهُم إبنَاً لَهُ - : لا تَضرِبْهُ ، واهْجُرْهُ ولا تُطِلْ11

159. man said, 'I complained to Abu al-Hasan [al-Kazim] (AS) about a son of mine. He said, 'Do not beat him, but rather ignore him [i.e.depriving him of your company], but not for too long.'12

160. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَنْ تأدّبَ بآدابِ اللَّهِ عزّ وجلّ أدّاهُ إلَى الفلاحِ الدائمِ1

160. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'He who disciplines himself by following the etiquette of Allah, the Exalted, will have lasting prosperity.'2

161. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَنْ لم يَصْلُحْ على‏ أدبِ اللَّهِ لم يَصْلُحْ على أدبِ نفسِهِ3

161. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'A man who is not reformed through the etiquette of Allah will not be rehabilitated through his self-discipline.'4

164. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : قُمْ يا بِلالُ فأرِحْنا بالصَّلاةِ1

164. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Stand up, Bilal, and relieve us with the [call for] prayer.'2

165. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ الشَّيطانَ إذا سَمِعَ النِّداءَ بالصَّلاةِ هَرَبَ3

165. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Satan flees when he hears the call for prayer.'4

166. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ أهلَ السَّماءِ لا يَسْمَعُونَ مِن أهلِ الأرضِ شَيئاً إلّا الأذانَ5

166. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The inhabitants of Heaven hear nothing from the inhabitants of the earth except for the call for prayer.'6

167. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : يُغْفَرُ للمؤذّنِ مَدُّ صَوتِهِ وبَصَرِهِ ، ويُصدِّقُهُ كلُّ رطْبٍ ويابِسٍ ، وله مِن كُلِّ مَن يُصلّي بأذانِه حَسَنةٌ1

167. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'The caller to prayer is forgiven according to the distance of his voice and his eyes; every wet and dry thing testifies to his credibility; and he receives a reward for everyone that prays in response to his call.'2

168. ا لإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لِيؤذّنْ لَكُم أفصحُكُمْ ، وَلْيؤمّكُمْ أفقهُكُم3

168. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Let the most eloquent from among you call for the prayer, and the most knowledgeable from among you lead the prayer.'4

169. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله: يا عليُّ ، إذا وُلِدَ لكَ غُلامٌ أو جاريةٌ فأذِّنْ في اُذنِه اليُمنى‏ وأقِمْ في اليُسرى‏ ؛ فإنّه لا يَضُرُّهُ الشّيطانُ أبداً1

169. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'O Ali! When a son or daughter is born to you, recite the adhan in his [or her] right ear and the iqama in the left ear; then Satan will never harm him [or her].'2

170. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام: مَن ساءَ خُلُقُه فأَذِّنوا في اُذنِهِ3

170. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'He whose manners deviate, recite the adhan in his ear.'4

171. ر سولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : كُفَّ أذاكَ عنِ النّاسِ ؛ فإنّهُ صَدَقةٌ تَصّدَّقُ بها عَلى‏ نَفْسِكَ1

171. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Abstain from harming others for this is your charity towards yourself.'2

172. ا لإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : مَن كَفّ يدَهُ عنِ النّاسِ فإنّما يكُفُّ عَنهُم يَداً واحدةً ويَكُفّونَ عنه أياديَ كثيرةً3

172. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'A man who keeps his hand from harming people is keeping one hand from [harming] them, whilst they would keep many hands from [harming] him [as a result].'4
