1852. THERE IS EXHORTATION IN EVERYTHING

6595. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : إنّ في كُلِّ شَي‏ءٍ مَوعِظَةً وعِبرَةً لذَوي اللُّبِّ والاعتِبارِ1

6595. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Verily, there is an exortation and lesson in everything for those who have wisdom and take lesson.'2

6596. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لِلكَيِّسِ في كُلِّ شَي‏ءٍ اتِّعاظٌ3

6596. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'There is exortation in everything for the sagacious.'4

6597. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن كانَت لَهُ فِكرَةٌ فَلَهُ في كُلِّ شَي‏ءٍ عِبرَةٌ5

6597. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'There is exortation in everything for he who contemplates.'6

6598. الإمامُ الكاظمُ عليه السلام - في كِتابِهِ إلى‏ هارونَ الرَّشيدِ ، لَمّا طَلَبَ مِنهُ المَوعِظَةَ - : ما مِن شَي‏ءٍ تَراهُ عَينُكَ إلّا وفيهِ مَوعِظَةٌ7

6598. Imam al-Kazim (AS) said in his letter to Harun al-Rashid, when he asked him for exhortation, 'Every single thing your eye sees contains an exhortation.'8

1853 - آدابُ المَوعِظَةِ

1853. ETIQUETTES OF EXHORTATION

( اُدْعُ إِلَى‏ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ).1

“Invite to the way of Your Lord with wisdom and good advice and dispute with them in a manner that is best. Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are guided.” 2

6599. جابر بن سَمُرَة : كانَ رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله لا يُطيلُ المَوعِظَةَ يَومَ الجُمُعَةِ ، إنّما هُنَّ كَلِماتٌ يَسيراتٌ3

6599. Jabir b. Samura said, 'The Prophet (SAWA) never prolonged the exhortation on Friday, but rather used simple phrases.'4

6600. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام: نُصحُكَ بَينَ المَلَأِ تَقْريعٌ5

6600. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Your advice to a congregation of people is like chiding.'6

6601. الإمامُ العسكريُّ عليه السلام : مَن وَعَظَ أخاهُ سِرّاً فَقَد زانَهُ ، ومَن وَعَظَهُ عَلانِيَةً فَقَد شانَهُ7

6601. Imam al-Askari (AS) said, 'He who exhorts his brother in secret has indeed adorned him, and he who exhorts him in public has dishonoured him.'8

1854 - الواعِظُ النَّفسيُ‏

1854. THE PERSONAL EXHORTER

6602. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن كانَ لَهُ في نَفسِهِ واعِظٌ كانَ علَيهِ مِن اللَّهِ حافِظٌ1

6602. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'He whose inner self is an exhorter to him has been granted a protector by Allah over him.'2

6603. الإمامُ زينُ العابدينَ عليه السلام - كانَ يقولُ - : ابنَ آدَمَ ، لا تَزالُ بِخَيرٍ ما كانَ لكَ واعِظٌ مِن نَفسِكَ ، وما كانَتِ المُحاسَبَةُ مِن هَمِّكَ ، وما كانَ الخَوفُ لَكَ شِعاراً ، والحُزنُ لَكَ دِثاراً ابنَ آدمَ ، إنّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَمبعوثٌ ومَوقوفٌ بَينَ يَدَيِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ ومَسؤولٌ فأعِدَّ جَواباً3

6603. Imam Zayn al-Abidin (AS) said, 'O son of Adam, you will continue to be good as long as you have an exhorter within yourself, and as long as taking account of your deeds is your concern, and as long as fear [of Allah] is your basis and caution is your armour.'4

6604. الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : مَن لَم يَجعَلِ اللَّهُ لَهُ مِن نفسِهِ واعِظاً ، فإنَّ مَواعِظَ النّاسِ لَن تُغنيَ عَنهُ شيئاً5

6604. Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'He for whom Allah has not made an exhorter from his own self, the exhortations of people will not benefit him at all.'6

1855 - مَن لا يَنتَفِعُ بِالمَوعِظَةِ

1855. THOSE WHO DO NOT BENEFIT FROM EXHORTATION

6605. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : الجاهِلُ لا يَرتَدِعُ ، وبِالمَواعِظِ لا يَنتَفِعُ1

6605. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The ignorant man cannot refrain [from sins], nor does he benefit from exhortations.'2

6606. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن لَم يُعِنْهُ اللَّهُ على‏ نَفسِهِ لَم يَنتَفِعْ بِمَوعِظَةِ واعِظٍ3

6606. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'He whom Allah does not help against his base self cannot benefit from the exhortation of an adviser.'4

6607. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : بَينَكُم وبَينَ المَوعِظَةِ حِجابٌ مِن الغِرَّةِ5

6607. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Between you and [benefitting from] an exhortation is a wall of inadvertency.'6

1856 - الواعِظُ غَيرُ المُتَّعِظِ

1856. THE EXHORTER WHO HIMSELF IS NOT EXHORTED

( يا أَيُّها الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ * كَبُرَ مَقْتاً عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَنْ تَقُولُوا مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ)1

“O you who have faith! Why do you say what you do not do? It is greatly outrageous to Allah that you should say what you do not do.” 2

6608. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : أوحَى اللَّهُ إلى‏ عيسَى بنِ مَريمَ : عِظْ نفسَكَ بحِكمَتي ، فإنِ انتَفَعتَ فَعِظِ النّاسَ ، وإلّا فاستَحيِ مِنّي3

6608. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Allah revealed to Jesus son of Mary, 'Exhort your self with My wisdom, and once you benefit from it then exhort people, and if not, then be ashamed in front of Me.'4

6609. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا تَكُن مِمَّن يُبالِغُ في المَوعِظَةِ ولا يَتَّعِظُ ، فهُو بِالقَولِ مُدِلٌّ ومِن العَمَلِ مُقِلٌّ ، يُنافِسُ فيما يَفنى‏ ، ويُسامِحُ فيما يَبقى‏ ، يَرَى الغُنمَ مَغرَماً ، والغُرمَ مَغنَماً5

6609. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Do not be like he who...exhorts extensively but does not take lesson himself, as he is is arrogant in his speech and little in deeds, he challenges for what is to perish, and allows to pass what is eternal, he sees benefits as a loss, and losses as beneficial.'6

6610. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : رُبَّ زاجِرٍ غَيرُ مُزدَجِرٍ ، رُبَّ واعِظٍ غَيرُ مُرتَدِعٍ7

6610. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Many a rebuker is himself not rebuked, and many an exhorter is himself not restrained [from sins].'8

6611. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : أيُّها النّاسُ ، اِستَصبِحوا مِن شُعلَةِ مِصباحِ واعِظٍ مُتَّعِظٍ ، وامتاحُوا مِن صَفوِ عَينٍ قَد رُوِّقَت مِن الكَدَرِ9

6611. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'O people, seek enlightenment from the torch of the lamp of an exhorter who takes his own advice and from the clear spring that has been filtered of all impurity.'10

6612. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : إنّ العالِمَ إذا لم يَعمَلْ بعِلمِهِ زَلَّت مَوعِظَتُهُ عنِ القُلوبِ كَما يَزِلُّ المَطَرُ عنِ الصَّفا11

6612. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'When the knowledgeable man does not act upon his knowledge, his exhortation slips away from the hearts like the rain slips off a flat rock.'12

1857 - الدَّعوَةُ بِغَيرِ اللِّسانِ‏

1857. THE SILENT PROPAGATION

6613. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : إنّ الوَعظَ الّذي لا يَمُجُّهُ سَمعٌ ، ولا يَعدِلُهُ نَفعٌ ، ما سَكَتَ عَنهُ لِسانُ القَولِ وَنطَقَ بهِ لِسانُ الفِعلِ1

6613. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The exhortation which cannot be missed by the hearing, nor matched by any other benefit is that which the tongue of speech remains silent about and the tongue of action expresses.'2

1858. SUCCESS

( قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَرأَيْتُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُ عَلَى‏ بَيِّنَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّي وَرَزَقَنِي مِنْهُ رِزْقاً حَسَناً وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُخالِفَكُمْ إِلَى‏ مَا أَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ إِنْ أُرِيدُ إِلَّا الْإِصْلَاحَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ وَمَا تَوْفِيقِي إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَإِلَيْهِ أُنِيبُ)2

“He said, ''O my people! Have you considered, should I stand on a manifest proof from my Lord, who has provided me a good provision from Himself? I do not wish to oppose you by what I forbid you. I only desire to put things in order, as far as I can, and my success lies only with Allah: in Him I have put my trust, and to Him I turn penitently.” 3

6614. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : التَّوفيقُ عِنايَةٌ4

6614. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Success is [divine] care.'5

6615. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : التَّوفيقُ رَحمَةٌ6

6615. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Success is [divine] mercy.'7

6616. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : التَّوفيقُ مِن جَذَباتِ الرَّبِّ8

6616. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Success is from the attractions of the Lord.'9

6617. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : التَّوفيقُ أوَّلُ النِّعمَةِ10

6617. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Success is the first blessing.'11

6618. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا يَنفَعُ اجتِهادٌ بغَيرِ تَوفيقٍ12

6618. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Endeavour without divine succour is useless.'13

6619. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : التَّوفيقُ رأسُ السَّعادَةِ14

6619. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Success is the fountainhead of happiness.'15

6620. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا قائدَ كالتَّوفيقِ16

6620. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'There is no leader like success.'17

6621. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مِن التَّوفيقِ حِفظُ التَّجرِبَةِ18

6621. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Holding on to experiences is part of success.'19

6622. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مِن التَّوفيقِ الوُقوفُ عِندَ الحَيرَةِ20

6622. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Stopping in the face of confusion is part of success.'21

6623. الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام : لا نِعمَةَ كالعافِيَةِ ، ولا عافِيَةِ كَمُساعَدَةِ التَّوفيقِ22

6623. Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, 'There is no blessing like that of good health, and there is no good health like having the assistance of success.'23

6624. الإمامُ الباقرُ عليه السلام - لَمّا سُئلَ عن «لا حَولَ ولا قُوَّةَ إلّا باللَّهِ» - : مَعناهُ لا حَولَ لَنا عَن مَعصِيَةِ اللَّهِ إلّا بِعَونِ اللَّهِ ، ولا قُوَّةَ لَنا على‏ طاعَةِ اللَّهِ إلّا بِتَوفيقِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ24

6624. Imam al-Baqir (AS), when asked about the phrase: 'There is no power or strength save in Allah', said, 'It means that we have no power to keep away from sins except through Allah's help, nor do we have strength to obey Allah, ecept through Allah's succour.'25

1859 - التَّوفيقُ وَالخِذلانُ‏

1859. SUCCESS AND FAILURE

( إِنْ يَنْصُرْكُمُ اللَّهُ فَلَا غَالِبَ لَكُمْ وَإِنْ يَخْذُلْكُمْ فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَنْصُرُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ)1

“If Allah helps you, no one can overcome you, but if He forsakes you, who will help you after Him? So in Allah let all the faithful put their trust.” 2

6625. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : إنّ المَعاصِي يَستَولي بِها الخِذلانُ على‏ صاحِبِها حتّى‏ تُوقِعَهُ بما هُوَ أعظَمُ مِنها3

6625. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Sins bring failure to those who commit them until it lands them in something even worse.'4

6626. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : التَّوفيقُ مُمِدُّ العَقلِ ، الخِذلانُ مُمِدُّ الجَهلِ5

6626. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Success is an aid for the intellect and failure is an aid for ignorance.'6

6627. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : أيُّها النّاسُ ؛ إنّهُ مَنِ استَنصَحَ اللَّهَ وُفِّقَ ، ومَنِ اتَّخَذَ قولَهُ دَليلاً هُدِيَ لِلّتي هِي أقوَمُ ؛ فإنَّ جارَ اللَّهِ آمِنٌ ، وعَدُوَّهُ خائفٌ7

6627. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'O people, those of you who seek advice from Allah will be granted divine succour, and he who takes His advice as a guide is a lead to that which is more stable, for one who takes refuge in Allah is the secure and his enemy is the frightened.'8

6628. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام في قَولِهِ تعالى‏ : (ومَا تَوْفِيقي إلّا بِاللَّهِ) وقَولِهِ:(إنْ يَنْصُرْكُمُ اللَّهُ فَلا غالِبَ لَكُمْ وإنْ يَخْذُلْكُم فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَنْصُرُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ) - : إذا فَعَلَ العَبدُ ما أمرَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّوجلَّ بهِ مِن الطّاعَةِ كانَ فِعلُهُ وَفْقاً لأمرِ اللَّهِ عَزَّوجلَّ وسُمِّيَ العَبدُ بهِ مُوَفَّقاً ، وإذا أرادَ العَبدُ أن يَدخُلَ في شي‏ءٍ مِن مَعاصِي اللَّهِ فَحالَ اللَّهُ تبارَكَ وتعالى‏ بَينَهُ وبَينَ تِلكَ المَعصِيَةِ فتَرَكَها كانَ تَركُهُ لَها بِتَوفيقِ اللَّهِ تعالى‏ ذِكرُهُ ، ومَتى‏ خَلّى‏ بَينَهُ وبَينَ تِلكَ المَعصِيَةِ فلَم يَحُلْ بَينَهُ وبَينَها حتّى‏ يَرتَكِبَها فَقَد خَذَلَهُ ولَم يَنصُرْهُ ولَم يُوَفِّقْهُ9

6628. Imam al-Sadiq (AS), with regard to Allah's verse in the Qur'an:“my success lies only with Allah” and His verse:“If Allah helps you, no one can overcome you...” , said, 'When the servant does as Allah has commanded in obedience to Him, his actions are according to Allah's orders, and this servant is called the successful, and when the servant wishes to embark upon a sinful act, then Allah Almighty obstructs between him and that sin so he leaves it, and his abstinence from it is as a result of Allah's divine succour, and when he has his own way in pursuing the sin then Allah will not obstruct him from the sin until he commits it, then He thwarts him and does not support him or give him success.'10

409. LOYALTY

1860 - الحَثُّ عَلَى الوَفاءِ بِالعَهدِ

1860. ENCOURAGING OF LOYALTY

( وَأَوْفُوا بِالْعَهْدِ إِنَّ الْعَهْدَ كَانَ مَسْؤُولاً)1

“And fulfil the covenants; indeed all covenants are accountable.”2

( وَالْمُوفُونَ بِعَهْدِهِمْ إِذا عَاهَدُوا)3

“And those who fulfil their covenants when they pledge themselves.”4

6629. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : مَن كانَ يُؤمِنُ باللَّهِ واليَومِ الآخِرِ فَلْيَفِ إذا وَعَدَ5

6629. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'He who believes in Allah and the Day of Judgment must fulfil his promise when he promises.'6

6630. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام: الوَفاءُ حِصنُ السُّؤدَدِ7

6630. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Loyalty is the fortress of chiefdom.'8

6631. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام: الوَفاءُ عُنوانُ وُفُورِ الدِّينِ ، وقُوَّةِ الأمانَةِ9

6631. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Loyalty is the epitome of the thriving of religion, and the strength of trust.'10

6632. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : أفضَلُ الأمانَةِ الوَفاءُ بِالعَهدِ11

6632. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The best trust is fulfilment of promises.'12

6633. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام: أفضلُ الصِّدقِ الوَفاءُ بِالعُهودِ13

6633. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The best of honesty is fulfilment of promises.'14

6634. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا تَعتَمِدْ على‏ مَوَدَّةِ مَن لا يُوفي بعَهدِهِ15

6634. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Do not depend on the friendship of one who does not fulfil his promises.'16

6635. الإمامُ زينُ العابدينَ عليه السلام - لَمّا سُئلَ عَن جَميعِ شَرايعِ الدِّينِ - : قَولُ الحَقِّ ، والحُكمُ بِالعَدلِ، والوَفاءُ بِالعَهدِ17

6635. Imam Zayn al-Abidin (AS), when he was asked [to summarize] all the laws of religion, said, 'To tell the truth, to judge with fairness and to fulfil a promise.'18

6636. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عليه السلام : ثَلاثَةٌ لا عُذرَ لأحَدٍ فيها : أداءُ الأمانَةِ إلَى البَرِّ والفاجِرِ ، والوَفاءُ بِالعَهدِ لِلبَرِّ والفاجِرِ ، وبِرُّ الوالِدَينِ بَرَّينِ كانا أو فاجِرَينِ19

6636. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, 'There are three actions for which no one has an excuse: returning a trust to both the pious and the immoral; fulfilment of a promise to both the pious and the immoral; and goodness to one's parents, whether they be pious or immoral.'20

1861. ENCOURAGING OF SOLEMNITY

( وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْناً وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَاماً)1

“The servants of the All-beneficent are those who walk humbly on the earth and when the ignorant address them, say, peace.” 2

6637. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله: علَيكُم بِالسَّكِينَةِ والوَقارِ3

6637. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'You must adopt tranquility and solemnity.'4

6638. رسولُ اللَّهِ صلى اللَّه عليه وآله : لَيس البِرُّ في حُسنِ اللِّباسِ والزِّيِّ ، ولكنَّ البِرَّ في السَّكِينَةِ والوَقارِ5

6638. The Prophet (SAWA) said, 'Goodness does not lie in good clothes or attire, but goodness lies in tranquility and solemnity.'6

6639. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : الوَقارُ حِليَةُ العَقلِ7

6639. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Solemnity is the adornment of the intellect.'8

6640. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لِتَكُن شِيمَتُكَ الوَقارَ ، فمَن كَثُرَ خُرقُهُ استُرذِلَ9

6640. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Let your prominent feature be solemnity for he who is increasingly clumsy becomes despicable.'10

6641. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : جَمالُ الرّجُلِ الوَقارُ11

6641. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The beauty of a man is his dignified bearing.'12

6642. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : سَببُ الوَقارِ الحِلمُ1

6642. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'The cause of solemnity is clemency.'2

6643. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : بِالصَّمتِ يَكثُرُ الوَقارُ3

6643. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'With silence solemnity increases.'4

6644. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن تَوَقَّرَ وُقِّرَ5

6644. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'He who acts with dignity is dignified.'6

6645. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : مَن عُرِفَ بِالحِكمَةِ لَحظَتهُ العُيونُ بِالوَقارِ وَالهَيبَةِ7

6645. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'He who is known to have wisdom will be seen with reverence and dignity.'8

6646. الإمامُ عليٌّ عليه السلام : لا يُستَعانُ علَى الوَقارِ إلّا بِالمَهابَةِ9

6646. Imam Ali (AS) said, 'Solemnity can only be achieved through adopting a respectful attitude.'10
